The Artifact

On Sol 50 Spirit got several pictures and especially:

Here, we can see and bright, shiny object like a metallic pin.

Some studies shows that this pin could be fallen off the backshield sailing over the region shown here after releasing the lander. NASA did not comment that interesting event.

The Anaglyph was made from the upper mentioned frames after removing the pixel bleeding around "the object". smile.gif

I think the 'attracting kooks via google' thing is a lost cause anyway - we talk about mars, spacecraft, rocks, we're going to flag up on Google with those sorts of things.

So to flag things up because they might attract kookiness (instead of actually being it) isnt a fair judgement - on that basis we might as well delete every MER image on the whole forum. And all the Cassini imagery. And the Viking. Actually- we might as well pack up and go home.

This discussion itself remains an interesting one, but isnt in the realm of kookiness in so far as no one is suggesting vast martian civilisations and all that garbage. Infact, if someone stumbles across this thread, it's a good thing - we've explained what it is - a discared piece of the entry system. It's also good because it actually shows what an artificial feature looks like on mars - they stand out rather well. So this thread is informative in a good way.

However - if people have issues with particular threads - it's no use saying "there's more kookie threads" - you have to tell me which threads. I cant read everything here anymore, it's too big. I have things to do like eat, sleep, work. If you think a thread, or particular posts or a particular poster are crossing the line, then tell me, specifically.

One poster has just returned from a 30 day account suspension for it, one ex member remains banned from the site all together, as does his IP address from the entire domain. I am perfectly prepared to take strong, rapid action where necessary - but I'm not going to delete every thread that says Face, Feature or Fossil

I have a metaphorical benchmark in my mind. If I see a post and I can imagine copy and pasting it to an anolmalists website, then it's over the line. To date - despite >1.6 million thread views - no one has started posting a verbose analysis of JPG noise. When that happens - myself and the mod team have a big bat marked "OUT" ready to go.
