Spirit is now almost at the bottom of Inner Basin.

Time to start a new topic.

Here is a 360 degree panoramic view taken with the L0 navcam on Sol 667.

Not much I can add to what's been said about James' panorama; it's excellent.

Here's an anaglyph version of the four pancams from Sol 685:

I am very much wondering about the outcrop downhill in the upper center of this mosaic (not sure of it's name); to me it looks like a different composition from anything else around here.

That is a fabulously interesting looking outcrop. Hard to say but it looks like layers. I would really like to see these up close and get some good science on this one.

Neat!! Looks to me like the far upper right is the first good look at the black sand that many took for a black hole... biggrin.gif

You got all the way up to 15? We got up to about 12...

I really don't mind living in Minnesota -- but there are times I wouldn't mind living somewhere just a touch warmer.

But we are expecting a low of 14 Friday morning! blink.gif

The weather changes here in a big hurry.

Texas is a lot like Mars...except it's much warmer...and wetter...and has a lot more life.

I spent a week driving through Texas one day a few years ago. For hours on end, you would see no more signs of advanced life forms (with the *possible* exception of the road itself) than you see in the MER images...

Somebody once described Edgar Rice Burrough's Mars as "super-Arizona with green apaches". Super-Arizona seems a fair description (red deserts, canyons, volcanos and apparently even old playas), but apparently no green apaches, alas! sad.gif

Removed lines.
I made a mistake. The pictures of arm are of Spirit and not of Opportunity.

Ummmm... it's Oppy's arm that has a problem, not Spirit's, as far as I know.

QUOTE (atomoid @ Dec 7 2005, 08:26 PM)
The linear features look as if a stick was dragged along the ground some time ago, much like small faulting features...

The pancam team must have found the linear features interesting as well. On sol 688 they took a half res 5 frame mosaic of it in L257. Here it is, with my humble attempt at colorization and frame balancing. It might be wind related. It seems possible that it was caused directly by the dust devil Spirit caught moving across this location back on sol 679, but I don't feel too confident about claiming that definitively.

Sol 685 Navcam, for context

Another context view:

Edit: Personally I think the dust devil was just a coincidence; I can't imagine a dd would have the energy to disrupt the ground in that way! Especially since the ground doesn't look freshly disturbed. There is at least one small rock laying directly on the line, and I'd be surprised if even a large Martian dust devil could move even a small rock like that. Of course, I Could Be Wrong.

Hmmm... Since you got me interested in this, I went back and noticed that there were lines at the previous drive location (AJW6). They were interested enough that they did a 2x2 pancam mosaic of this zigzag pattern as well as (I think maybe) a second Navcam sweep around the rover to see if there were any more.
