I wonder how much of a problem those sand ripples would be for Spirit on her way to Home Plate? Anyway, the more Spirit advances towards the floor of Inner Basin, the more interesting and spectacular the scenery becomes. Looks like the sky is quite clear, too. |

I think we could see 100m+ drives on that stuff easily - if it were very very soft it wouldnt have big rocks sat on top of it

Besides this being a hell of an inspiring image...Is that on the lower left corner a piece of the rover? Looks like metal shining...

Anyway, the more Spirit advances towards the floor of Inner Basin, the more interesting and spectacular the scenery becomes. Looks like the sky is quite clear, too. That zone is not for worrying since the sand is failry compact. Not much thickness of sand and under of this is mostly of rock or outcrop. Also Spirit is going down and that transverse will never get stuck. The problem is to climb again and it needs a compact terrain. The higher slope, more compact land is needed. The next problem would be to try to climb into Home Plate which is somewhat higher. It is matter of time to search for a good patch that is easiest to reach to Home Plate. Rodolfo |

I would have thought that if it were THAT windy, it wouldnt have any dust left on it
If you look at all the DD tracks from orbit - the prevailing direction is SSE - and thus Ultreya is essentially the wind 'shadow' of Husband Hill. Doug |

Well, my reasoning is intuitive and not logical. If I see some ripples. It is very affirmative that that zone is windy. Then if there is no windy, then no ripples.
Ripples are not formed mainly by dust. Dust is thiner and I think it is not the main component of dunes or ripples. That is the difference. The wind direction in Marte changes according to the longitudinal season. During the winter in the southern hemisphere (where Spirit is roving and was the time of frequent dust devil appearence), the prevailing wind direction as you said is: from NNW to SSE. The summer in the southern hemisphere, the prominent wind direction might change from SSE to NNW. The other thing is about the southern slope of Columbia Hill, where is localized the Ultreya looks continued smooth and curved surface. That mean that zone is sand deposited. The word of tought. The above comments are only of an amateur. I am not as a meteorologist scientist but willing to understand it as a hobby time. Rodolfo |
