Spirit is now almost at the bottom of Inner Basin.

Time to start a new topic.

Here is a 360 degree panoramic view taken with the L0 navcam on Sol 667.

And the arrowed feature is on First Base, if I'm not mistaken. This is going to be an interesting area to explore.

Look what a perfect, gentle slope this is for Spirit's descent into Inner Basin.
I don't know how they do it, but the planners at JPL/NASA (or wherever they are) always seem to find the most ideal route.
It almost looks as if this slope was specially prepared for Spirit. rolleyes.gif

I would like that Spirit first visit the Commanche to do IDD before heading to south route. The below picture was taken from Mhoward's picture at the previous append)

The above dark rock is very interesting and I seems it is the base and horn of the Columbia Hill.

Of course, Spirit will check out Comanche first (sometime this weekend), and then it's full speed to either El Dorado or Allegheny Ridge. smile.gif

The changed perspective bring me to think the two object were very close... blink.gif
In this summit view, real distances/position are clear:

QUOTE (djellison @ Dec 15 2005, 08:07 AM)
Using the river analogy - it's the heaviest particles that drop first, lighter particles carry further, so perhaps heavier, more basaltic-sand-like particles get dropped in this area, whilst the lighter dust remains airborn?

Just guessing, but it would make sense. There are a couple of similarly colours patches elsewhere in the Columbia complex, and in the same sort of position w.r.t. peaks.

That's exactly what I suspect. There are dust drift accumulations everywhere, but the dark ones only seem to appear right behind the lee side of barriers

Possible routes to be followed.
With time as a problem the Allegheny way seems the more probable one, maybe this weekend decisions will be taken.
But, in my opinion the El Dorado option looks more rich in targets...we've got some possible layers leaving Comanche and going up, then open road to a patch of dark sand similar others we have seen and that were never scrutinized, and on the way back, several outcrops paving the way down to the inner basin...
Opinions?

The following pics are not yet on the ground, but I would have a close look at them to have an idea of the chosen path.

They are already...Humm...Looking at that seems like it's a rough path for Spirit...
I'm tempted to say that Allegheny will win the race...
