For a while I've been realising that scale is difficult to judge in rover pictures. Given the close horizon on Mars, I often suspect that the features I'm looking at may be smaller than I think. For example, would climbing the Columbia Hills be an easy ten-minute stroll or an epic climb for a human?
Of course I can look up the numerical sizes of these features but numbers don't always make things as clear as pictures. Perhaps some of you who specialise in image manipulation might be able to produce some versions of rover pictures with a superimposed average-sized human figure, to give an idea of how these features would appear to human explorers? Just a thought. If it sounds utterly pointless, ignore me! |

QUOTE (lyford @ Dec 15 2005, 08:38 AM) Great work, MaxSt and Ilbasso! Though I would be careful lest Though the the best candidates appear to have been lost in the Planetary Society's website redesign. Or are there more sinister forces at work??? No sinister forces, just lack of time! Actually the diaries are there, they're just very hard to find until we post our new "Planetary Analogs" section publicly. I'll give you guys a sneak preview http://www.planetary.org/explore/topics/pl...on_diaries.html --Emily -------------------- My website - My Patreon - @elakdawalla on Twitter - Please support unmannedspaceflight.com by donating here.

The photo didnt quite sit on the mosaic properly, something I'll have to work on for future composits, I think it might be noise, the CCD images are a little noisier than that photo was, so it doesnt seem to 'sit' properly on the background. A nice start and the colours fit quite well

Maybe it is now time, there's only ten days left, to start a new thread concerning Christmas...For best wishes...to start doing something for the MER team... What do you think about it? A new thread to talk about it? With suggestions for a MER team xmas gift? Maybe a CD where each one of us could put whatever he/she wanted to? An audio message, a video one, a picture, a text... Can we discuss that? -------------------- "Ride, boldly ride," The shade replied, "If you seek for Eldorado!"

QUOTE (ustrax @ Dec 15 2005, 07:44 PM) Starting to wish a merry xmas... OK, I'm assuming this is seriously being considered by members of this forum.Maybe it is now time, there's only ten days left, to start a new thread concerning Christmas...For best wishes...to start doing something for the MER team... What do you think about it? A new thread to talk about it? With suggestions for a MER team xmas gift? Therefore, I propose an intra-forum raffle be held, the proceeds of which can be used to purchase an all-expenses paid vacation holiday to Tahiti for two members of the MER team. And quoting the Alec Baldwin character in the movie Glengarry Glen Ross, second prize: a set of steak knives. |

AFAIK, he is not in Mamet's original, Pulitzer Prize-winning play. |

QUOTE (djellison @ Dec 15 2005, 06:17 PM) I've been thinking about this, and putting, say, someone on the lip of Burns cliff, or stood inside Bonne Crater, or something like that would give some nice scale - I'll see what I can do, it's a cool idea.
