Looks like a beautiful place and they are planning a significant outreach program.

here is a quote from the website:

OUTREACH PROGRAMME

The Outreach Programme was a key element in the selection of Valencia as host for the IAC-2006. From the beginning, the Local Organising Committee has been working on a very ambitious programme devoted to spreading a better knowledge to the wider public of Space Science and Technology, and its impact on daily life.

The main theme for this 57th venue, “bringing Space closer to people”, is more than a theme. It is a commitment from the LOC member institutions, with the aim that the IAC celebration in Valencia should be a golden opportunity to really encourage Valencian society to get involved in understanding Space exploration and its effects on their lives.

The LOC is focusing its efforts into:

1. Primary And High Schools

2. Universtities And Research Centers

3. General Public

Hmmm - might get in touch with them and try to open up some channels of discussion

What I need though - is a list of people who might like to give presentations at a conference. Typically these things are about an hour - techniques, results, mission specific stuff - if you have something you think you could contribute, let me know

AND it has a local airport...

http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/dests.php?flash=chk
Ryanair from London Stansted, Brussels, Milan and Rome

http://www.easyjet.co.uk/EN/Planning/Destination/index.html
Easyjet from Stansted, Bristol, Berlin an London Gatwick

Thomsonfly do Coventry-Valencia

I'm not up to speed on German, French etc cheap airlines - I'm sure there's options though.

AND - it would just be possible, with a late night return I'd imagine, to do a day trip to Madrid for the DSN

So - do we schedule for just before or just after the big conference
(and can anyone find a price for entry to the main conf? These things are usually anything from about $80 to $500 - I cant find anything yet)

Doug:

I wonder if somebody else could be persuaded to pay, at least for entry?

National astronautical associations, universities, the EU, ESA, Richard Branson...

This might fit well with the 'outreach' strategy - perhaps as a sort of 'sub-poster' session.

Perhaps if we offer to give talks locally during the week? I'd be happy to do that

What we need is something of a handle of numbers - both people wanting to attend, and people who could present at our conference, and then we can go to the IAC2K6 people and say "look -we can give X talks on A,B & C to locals, schools etc, can we strike some sort of deal?"

I've been to a few IACs in the past (e.g., Torino, Amsterdam, and Toulouse); these events are fairly interesting and informative. And I highly recommend the proposed venue for IAC 2006 in Valencia, Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias (CAC), which I've visited in the past.

My personal experience (as a research chemist) is that European Science Conferences fees are usually exhorbitant

So here are 2 possible strategies to gain free admission

1. We offer to do some public outreach talks for the general public and local schools. If I'm able to attend, I can gladly do this (in english but not spanish) since I give many of these types of talks on Mars, Saturn, etc. Its also a great and fun way to meet and experience the local people. A drawback to this is that of course they have all the top experts at the conference.

2. Be press representatives according to what is listed on the website. Please see the exact quote from the website below. Its a stretch, but I do write a column for my astronomy club newsletter, "The Siderial Times" in Princeton, NJ,USA.

---------------------------------

PRESS CENTRE

1. Press centre
2. Press registration
3. Press kit
4. News

The Press Centre located in L´HEMISFERIC (I-Max Theatre) will count with all the facilities the journalists need to work easily.

Credentials for press representatives are free of charge and will permit the bearer to access the opening ceremony, technical sessions, special press conferences and complementary social functions offered by the IAC 2006.

---------------------------------

is this too looney?
