Jan 10: Meeting of the Amateur Astronomers Association of Princeton (AAAP)
Time: 8 PM Location: Peyton Hall (Astrophysics Dept), Ivy Lane, Princeton U campus At the next meeting of our astronomy club, I will present a brief update on Stardust Returns and the New Horizons Launch. More importantly, I will be hosting the featured lecture about extreme life forms relavent to the discussion about the origins of life on earth and beyond. Keynote Speaker: Professor Peter Rona of Rutgers University Title: "Volcanoes of the Deep Sea:The Science Behind the Imax Films" Description: Prof Rona is an internationally recognized pioneer in scientific exploration of the deep sea floor and led the exploration and discovery of the first black smoker hot springs. He will illustrate how the spectacular volcanic processes on the deep ocean floor relate to the origin of life on Earth and are connected to the search for life beyond Earth, in our Solar System and beyond. He will provide a first hand account of his expeditions to the seafloor hydrothermal vents which sustain the other worldly extreme life forms new to science in their world of perpetual darkness. The IMAX film is available on DVD (executive producer Janes Cameron). A recent relevant article by Peter Rona: “Secret Survivor”, Natural History Magazine, September 2004, page 50. STUDENTS are welcome and encouraged to attend! All are invited to attend our free astronomy lectures open to the public. please check website for more info: thank you ken Email: ken@princetonastronomy.org http://www.princetonastronomy.org/ |
