(i) the Martian sky is undergoing a lot of color changes over the seasons (measured traditionally since the Viking era at 20° above the horizon) from a creamy "peachy" orange-pink color in winter to a medium-dark pink (NOT blue !) in summer ; (ii) the sky opacity (its dust content) varies sometimes widly over several days meaning a change between a small and a huge contrast ; (iii) the position of the sun in the sky affects also the human perception of colors when looking around to the landscape (noticed by the astronauts on the Moon)... ...so a change in luminosity and contrast affects a lot the colors themselves. As we used to say during the "old" Viking times "Finding and reproducing the Martian colors is really Art" ! As Napoléon said : "A good image worths a long speech" : thus see herebelow an illustration taken from VoM showing the changes on Mars over its seasons... |
