NASA is talking now about allying with the ESA on the Mars sample return -- but "relatively inexpensive" is not a phrase that comes to mind in connection with that one. If this rumor is true (and I'm extremely skeptical): maybe they're planning a multi-nation collaboration on Europa Orbiter, including a lander?

Agreed. I don't think that one can put the words "Mars Sample Return" and 'inexpensive" in the same sentence and keep a straight face. I'm not even sure that one can say "Europa Orbiter/Lander" and the the word "inexpensive" with a straight face. UNLESS there has been some technological breakthrough that will aloow either of these missions to be done in some new and revolutionary fashion. And yes, I am doubtful of the story as well, but the fellow who posted it does seem pretty well connected and I doubt that such a story would be made up. Why would one wish to do that? So, who knows? My guess might be a Jupiter Aerobot, using direct entry. Well, perhaps you can, if you are thinking of some type of SCIM - like proposal. -------------------- |
