The only bit of the arrays that the IDD could reach would be about 5% of the Array I recon - not much more than that - and the only thing it could do is ruin it smile.gif

I'm betting on Mid February 2007 before she starts to make any significant movement away from this spot.

I second Alan's motion to start a pool of bets for when Spirit makes her "Escape from LRHaven"!
Would 100m distance from where she now sits count as "escape"?

Since August is the solstice, I'm gonna guess December 1, 2006 (Sol 1001?) as the day Spirit breaks the solar-tilt leash.

If the Low Ridge deposits are the same composition as Home Plate, is there a need to return to HP at all? If not, then what is Spirit's next likely target -- a very, very slow climb up McCool, or a slow crawl towards the Chaos terrain?

8 months at Low Ridge Haven, I hope we don't get bored.................

Spirit will have a fun and safe time to climb to the top of LRH. There is somewhat windier. smile.gif

I agree since the Spirit has limited traction that won't permit to climb normally toward McCool Hill. So the next excursion time would be most probably toward the down slope. It means that Spirit will again visit HP and toward the Chaos terrain. The philosophy is to put 20 percent of effort in order to gain 80% of science.

Although it would be a significant change of pace and style it would(will?) be very interesting to watch how the "salt" line that the locked FR wheel left in the sand weathers over the next few months.

Beautifull work again! Solar panels doesn't look very dusty. How do they know how dusty the panels are ? Comparing the theoritical output relative to the actual ? Watching accumulation on the sundial ? Anybody knows ?
Thanks

You should see this two images of the Sundial (through L7 filter):

Sol 9

Sol 809 :

The dust deposition is very clear, isnt'it?

So, I've just made this approximate true color image of the "sheet layer" we'd seen :

(Click on the picture to enlarge)

It's very strange the way this sort of feature can exist. Their material may be more strong than the other...

Er... ...does one surface being flat have something to do with it? And don't the brushed rocks all tend to reveal much darker dust-free interiors?

A great view indeed! cool.gif

I shifted your panorama to get the rover in "one piece" and this is the result; I hope you don't mind.

Where did the bootprint come from? Here's hoping whoever made it will take a moment and wipe off the solar panels next time around. (It looks like about a U.S. size 14)

Thirded - if not fourthed or fifthed! 100m from the present location sounds good,.. assuming that the plan is to remain virtually motionless, within say 5m radius of the current location, all winter. OTOH, if Spirit makes an occasional, carefully planned sprint from one safe spot to another,.. it could be a contentious criteria!

Anyway -- as we have a semi-official estimate of "eight months or so" -- I'm going to take the easiest option... January 15th, 2007. If Spirit is still capable of driving on that date, it'll make a nice (approximate) third birthday for the joint rovers. Oppy might be about to start exploring VC around that time, too... so here's to a happy new year! smile.gif
