Fresh pics from sol 816 at the exploratorium.
And here is the "sink hole": http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/opportuni...RHP2408R2M1.JPG rolleyes.gif

An ancient little crater? Geologists, take your time.

I'd be delighted if the 'sink-hole' was exactly that, but I'm inexorably driven to see it as a random deflation feature - I think that the whole plain is underlain by such features and that we're looking at good ol' mass wasting, exposed only here and there. I don't think it'll turn out to be exceptional in it's own right, but that it is a 'normal' feature we just don't normally see. If you see what I mean!

We'll see what we see when we see it.

I'm inclined to think that it's a Payson-like feature, much on the same side of the fence as Bob. But since this is something new, I'll look closely.

Let me get a "dark cobble" map fixed up to post later tonite.

Is it worth stopping? The sinkhole is not very interesting, it has clearly been used as a dump - some old pipework, bones, a burnt newspaper...

The bones could be an interesting target. wink.gif

Good spot for the usual weekend stop, I'd be surprised if it was any longer.

I think that Sink Hole is a young crater that has not filled in yet. Since Tesheiner has been so accurate with his prediction on the route of Oppy. I think we should name the Crater Tesheiner Crater.

And I love anaglyphs :-)
It looks like 35m crater is on the high point after a depression after this "little crater" or "sink hole".

I just looked at the "sink hole" fresh, without reading ealrier comments, and it looks to like a mini-Erebus to me. Therefore an older smaller crater, rather than a fresh Fram-type with blocky rim. Worth a quick look then drive on by

Looking at the map, it appears that the sinkhole actually sits on a chain of something stretching in the south-west to north-east direction. Can it be related to Anatolia?

Images after sol 817 drive are available at the exploratorium: http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/opportuni...cam/2006-05-12/

This is the "vista" from the current site, centered at 126º. The "sink-hole" is to the right and an eventual path towards VC is by the left of the big dune at the center.

This is part of tosol (818) planned activity:

CODE
818 p2410.07 24  0   0   24  2   50   pancam_crater_mosaic_6x1_L257R2

So it looks like the "sinkhole" is a crater, at least for the rover team. smile.gif

And this is last view (sol818) of EdgeCorner crater, crossed eyes steregram:

We see lot of details on it, included possible boulder in front of the crater...
