I saw the blurb (via NASA Watch) about Mike Dornheim, a very respected reporter/editor for AW&ST, being missing. I met Mike a few times and he's defintely one of the good guys. I sure hope this doesn't turn out to have a tragic ending.

I never met him, but he was certainly a good writer. (I hope the operative term is still "IS", not "was".)

Damn. This is very close to home. I've been to that restaurant, it's one of the nicest within a half-hour drive of my house. It's a beautiful part of Los Angeles county, in the steep transverse Santa Monica mountains that are being actively built by uplift along a restraining bend of the San Andreas Fault -- very narrow, very windy mountain roads with very steep dropoffs, and lots of people driving like morons. Recently, a Nissan Sentra containing 7 teenagers (one of them in the trunk) also went over the side of another such road, tumbling a hundred feet. They all survived. It looks like Dornheim did not enjoy their luck. How awful.

An update from The Associated Press on the sad news (via NASA Watch).
Here's to clear skies and a fair tailwind, Mike. |

I hope no one minds that I changed the topic title.
AW&ST has a nice story online with links to a couple of Mike's articles (his final one and one from 2004 on SpaceShipOne). This post has been edited by AlexBlackwell: Jun 13 2006, 09:39 PM |

I'm sad to hear this very tragic news.
Mike was a member and friend of this forum. Indeed for one of his Aviation Week articles in Sep 2005, in an article titled 'King of the Hill', he printed a Spirit image compiled by Nico which I previously referenced here (post #102 bottom): http://www.unmannedspaceflight.com/index.p...indpost&p=35199 ken |

I'll only add that I'll greatly miss Mike's articles, especially his coverage of JPL missions. His articles were especially insightful and almost always included tidbits that weren't found in the sanitized, fourth-grade level NASA PAO press kits. I'll miss his presence at press conferences, where he really showed the contrast between the true "pros" like himself, colleague Craig Covault, etc., and, to put it charitably, "the rest of the bunch."
I won't get personal, but to illustrate the latter category, I'll use an example from one of the first Spirit press conferences where some of the "journalists/pundits/etc." were clearly in "death watch" mode looking for the "human interest" side of the story and asking touchy-feely questions. For example, I distinctly remember some clown reporter standing against the wall who asked Theisinger the "If-the-rovers-are-like-your-children"-type question. I believe this guy was also at the Mars Pathfinder press conferences asking similarly goofy questions about the naming of the rocks. People wilth a genuine passion for and knowledge of this sphere of activity are rare...those who can tie that knowledge and passion into an ability to communicate in an entertaining and informative way ever more so. People like Mike are few and far between so he will be much missed. My thoughts are with his family and colleagues.
