I'm sure that there is a crop from the the MM pan that will make Stu say "wow! that's something" and keep the gremlins at bay

Great pic Jvandriel, ... but am I the only one who thinks the McMurdo pan subject is a bit, well... boring? Don't hit me! I know, I know, it's heresy, McMurdo is the complete opposite of boring I think that the combo of looking down from the Husband Hill summit and up and back to El Dorado via McMurdo is just the perfect juxtaposition. And there is great science too. This had to be accomplished at some point and now is the perfect time. And its great PR for public talks to illustrate the magnificant accomplishments of the rovers and their creators. Thats the approach I have used with gratifying results. Just pick the crops that tell the grandest story. and quite soon it will be time to move on, lots ot tantalizingly "tasty" targets call out for our girl "Spirit" ken PS: The MuMurdo pan will be just perfect for IMAX:Roving Mars The Sequel |

Well I think the view from Low Ridge is one of the best of the mission, there is just so many sights all around.
Boring!? What planet are you looking at Stu? -- I'm off on holiday now - but I couldn't leave without giving you guys a little McMurdo present. Only half size and there is quite a bit of contrast mismatch but it's the best I could do given virtually zero time. I'll do a corrected, full size version (and colour 3D) when I get back - the "grout" should be done by then as well. Bye for now, James -------------------- |

Stu,
Sorry, I misunderstood what you were saying and related that pretty irrelevant story. (BTW It's not my story, I remembered it from a book called, The Snow Leopard by Peter Matthiessen.) You are a good guy to agree to a Mars Day presentation for a bunch of munchkins. It sounds like it could be a real blast. From the point of view of a non-Mars watcher, the McMurdo pan could seem boring. In fact, you could use that as a hook to get the folks to look at the image. Ask them how many people thinks it's boring. Then tell them stories about the pan. You could point out where Spirit's wheel froze up and it had to drag it as it was racing the clock to find a place to spend the winter. Or you could use some of what you've learned from that new dictionary But perhaps I'm missing the point again. gray |

Thanks Gray, I like those ideas!
( Wish I'd never dared to call McMurdo "boring" tho... Looking forward to Sunday. I've given this presentation before and it's always a joy showing kids images of Olympus Mons, Valles Marineris and other martian features... The colourised images created by members of forums like this (used with their permission, of course, and thanks again to the people who've given me their permission to show their creations to my young audiences I think I'll save the McMurdo pan and geology discussion for a more adult audience tho, the kids (and we're talking 6-10 year olds here) won't be too excited by scoriacious basalt sitting on top of the bedded evaporite... -------------------- |

Well I'm assuming that the McMurdo pan *isn't* finished yet, there are still a few gaps I would like to see grouted. But I've grown tired of waiting so here's my latest.

Looks like I was wrong, it appears that the McMurdo pan is finished . I'm still working on the right pan and hopefully I'll get the full 3D version out before we hit Vicky. (Pretty poor grouting on the right eye pan btw, I don't think I'll be getting JPL to tile my bathroom!) James -------------------- |

Nice previews ... I believe Spirit completed the " McMurdo mega-panorama " on sol 923 ...
Any ideas how long it might take NASA-JPL to come up with a color version ? ( Would like to use for my next MER article |
