Hey, Bjorn: I just saw The Bad Astronomer's blog entry. Did you take advantage of these dark skies?

The event was actually a big success despite the fact that it was mostly cloudy. Not totally cloudy though - a few stars were visible. This seems likely to get repeated next year.
However, only streetlights were turned off and perhaps a bit surprisingly it turned out that probably the majority of the light pollution is from other sources although this is difficult to estimate. Actually the light pollution in and around Reykjavik (Iceland's capital) is *huge* considering the fact that the inhabitants there are only about 200,000 - it must be among the most light polluted places in the world when this is taken into account. My feeling is that it is probably comparable to the light pollution in a city like San Francisco (to name a place I've been to) although this is very difficult to estimate. Perhaps slightly less but not by much and I'm not even sure it is less. |
