For the mathematically challenged, such as myself, could someone please post the exact time when Spirit enters Sol 1000. My feeble calculations place the moment on the evening of Wednesday next, October 25th., at either 1845 or 2345 GMT, depending on whether you add or subtract the extra 40 minutes a day to get Earth time. A Duff beer for anyone who can coach us dunces on this one!

Well, I go to Mer Home Page and hit "refresh". biggrin.gif
Now, when Spirit will be ready to blow her 1000 candles, I hope a DD will help a little bit dd:
Note for Doug : In case of power increase, it would not be attributed to a DD but to the 1K's candles bug instead smile.gif

Spirit and Oppy born 1 sol old.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Asian_age_reckoning

QUOTE
East Asian age reckoning is a concept used in East Asian countries originating in China. Several East Asian cultures, such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese, share a traditional way of counting a person's age. Newborns start at one year old, and each passing of a New Year, rather than the birthday, adds one year to the person's age. This system is still widely used in China and Korea, but less common in other countries.

So Spirit and Opportunity age reckoning is a concept used on Mars originating in China. Newborns start at one sol old, and each passing of a midnight, rather than the landing time, adds one sol to the rover's age. sounds interesting smile.gif

I have a sort of 1000 Sols pair of celebratory pictures - but I will be making them public on Monday Nov 6th - which is the date on which we reach the 2000th cumulative sol.

I admit it...I'm all emotional...A hug? Anyone?... rolleyes.gif

THE SPIRIT'S SALUTE.

"THE hero's noble shade stands high

On yonder turret grey;
And as the ship is sailing by,

He speeds it on his way.

"See with what strength these sinews thrill'd!

This heart, how firm and wild!
These bones, what knightly marrow fill'd!

This cup, how bright it smil'd!

"Half of my life I strove and fought,

And half I calmly pass'd;
And thou, oh ship with beings fraught,

Sail safely to the last!"

Goethe 1774.

ONE THOUSAND SUNSETS

One thousand sunsets have I seen,
One thousand blue dawns too;
One thousand nights of knife-sharp cold
Have I endured to send you images
Of Barsoom’s beautiful burgundy peaks,
Its rubble, rocks and stones,
All scoured by dust, once under cool water
But now dry as fire-flensed bones.

One thousand times pale sol has traced
Her arc above my head;
But no ball of fire shines in these eyes, instead
A wan and wasted disc,
A coin of faded gold, the brutal cold
Of Mars – that chills me to my core –
Too deep for Sol’s meagre heat to ever hope to thaw,
And so I wake from sleep each dawn to find
A fine-stitched cloak of hoarfrost covers me.

One thousand purple velvet dusks
Have left me close to tears;
Fearful, not for my own frail self
But for your world, my dearest
Makers: the sapphire-splinter beacon I see
Blazing as a star before I sleep seems
so small from here; its ink-blue oceans,
Forests, fields and streams reduced
To a twinkling Tinkerbell gleam,
A spark of laughter, life and love
That could grow roaring into a galaxy-devouring
forest fire in Far Far Future years to come
Or be snuffed out in an instant, smoke curling
From its seared remains the only sign
That Man Was Here – leaving me standing alone,
Staring at where the Evening Star used to be.

Ten times longer have I lived than I
Was meant to do; oh, I am so tired now,
Cold and old, with worn wheels weary
From turning and sleep-starved eyes burning
With the grit that dust devils spit into them whenever they spin by.
But I shall not die, not yet, not yet,
There is much more for these fading eyes to see.
All I ask is this – go stand under the stars tonight,
Look up, and think of me…

I choose,

I choose to celebrate alone
On the other side of the Sun
The 1000 Sols that come
Like a go for another run

I’m sad, I cry, I miss you All
Don’t let de down in the cold
I’d loved to be in the warmth and mild
I’d loved to be your Prodigy Child

Even if I do this for you
Such a long time without a review!
Every Sol I wait your phone call
I’m sure you know I love you All

I will continue my duty
For the best and Eternity
I have one request only
Say Hello to Sister Oppy

Climber
