Thanks Emily for all your posts.
I am really impressed by the gullies. I've just a little question. If these gullies are created by avalanches of fluidized sand, why don't we see some build up of sand at the end ? -- Rakhir |

Thanks Emily for all your posts. I am really impressed by the gullies. I've just a little question. If these gullies are created by avalanches of fluidized sand, why don't we see some build up of sand at the end ? -- Rakhir Yeah, I don't see that either. To me, it almost looks like these gullies are growing by sapping rather than avalanches... This picture shows what appears to be snow in the gullies, along with some depressions at the end. Maybe the snow melts causing short-living water that then seeps to the gully end, causing sapping from underneath making those sinkhole chains. I don't see how a fluidized sand travelling downslope could cause features like this... The walls of the gullies do look higher than the surroundings, almost like levees. Very bizarre! -------------------- Space Enthusiast Richard Hendricks
-- "The engineers, as usual, made a tremendous fuss. Again as usual, they did the job in half the time they had dismissed as being absolutely impossible." --Rescue Party, Arthur C Clarke Mother Nature is the final inspector of all quality. |

Yeah, I don't see that either. You may be onto something in suggesting melting as part of the process; note GuyMac's comment on the HiRise blog that these gullies prefer the sun-facing side of the slopes: QUOTE PSP Image 1440-1255 shows a network of gully-like channels on the sides of dunes inside Russell Crater. On the sunward side, the channels are long and continuous, terminating at the base of the dunes. On the more shadowed side, strange stipples interrupt the otherwise silky smooth dune faces, as if the channel forming process never quite gets going. Steve |
