Has anybody else managed to download the Eberswalde image? I'm playing with it and am having a couple of problems but because it's so big I don't know whether to suspect a problem with the file, or if it's just the limitations of my computer. First of all, when I open it in OpenEV, it's upside down. Second of all, the bottom third or so of the image is grayed out, and remains stubbornly grayed out even when exported. sad.gif Here's a screen cap.

Is anyone else encountering similar problems?

Sorry, I meant to post when I was done. I took Dr. McEwen's original tiff into Photoshop, cropped each half, saved them as uncompressed tiffs, and then converted them to jp2 files (using something called kdu_compress on the command line...I'm not sure what package this conversion tool is part of.) I was on a Mac Pro Power PC with 2 GB of RAM and it took two days (including all the false starts and other mistakes I made.) In the future, this should only take me a couple hours smile.gif

ExpressView apparently has a limit to how large a file it can display. Thanks everyone who pointed out this image.

An aside: my favorite image so far is PSP_001440_1255 - "Channels on Dunes in Russell Crater". The future (hopefully) image I'm most excited about is the head of Mangala Valles in Memnonia, but who knows when that image will be taken.

As I look at these images, I am shocked by how little I actually know about Mars, despite my years of enthusiasm and the "Mars" class I took last year. I'm also shocked at how little time I actually have to look at images. I need a HiWall in my office!

kdu_compress is a program in the kakadu JPEG 2000 suite of tools, see http://www.kakadusoftware.com/ if you are interested in more. It has a client kdu_show that only works for windows, but allows for the use of the JPIP protocol, which HiView will use when it's done (I'm tempted to take a peak at HiView, and see what progress has been made with it).

As an aside, the HiRISE program that creates the JPEG 2000 images is based on the kdu_compress. It basically added a new type of format for it, to allow PDS image files to be converted.
