It was bound to happen....after the Beacon fest, and the Arrival madness.....
http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/jpeg/PIA01150.jpg Have a look at that image - and then pick your spot, expressed as X and Y. I'm going for 2, -3 ( 2m East, 3m South) Pick to a nearest metre and try not to pick one that's already been done. Winner takes.....bugger all. My best guess on Sojourner known last position is.... sojourner -4,-15 Now - this is only a guide and we will reproject these coords back onto the HiRISE map...so it's not what feature you think it's next to on that image...because that is very warped in places - it's how it seems on the HiRISE image. list djellison 2,-3 |

I've tried putting the new topo map over the top of the pool 'sheet'....tried the HiRISE image on the sheet, and the overhead projections from the Pathfinder era just don't match up very well at all.
I always said I'd take just the numbers from the HiRISE imagery and consider the image on the Pool image to just be a 'guide' and not an actual reference..... but it's much harder than I expected to match them up. Every overlay I've done has put it with Mizar JUST ahead of Rakhir. If you look at the background image from the Pool itself - (which we said we wouldn't) Mizar got it bloody SPOT ON with Rakhir 2nd, SL 3rd. I think Mizar gets it - Rakhir very very closely second. I had a devil of a time getting the overhead projections to line up with the HiRISE image as well. But the USGS topomap registers pretty well (with some mismatches visible in the 20m square version). I had to blink the various products back and forth for quite some time in order to "convince" myself that the bump south of the lander is likely Sojourner. I'm pretty sure it is, but I won't stake my life on it. -Tim. |
