I also thought that one interesting for the gullies being on an exterior wall rather than the more usual interior. I looked at the paper you mention and Fig. 3 does seem possibly to have exterior wall grooves at lower left. I suppose interiors (concavity) are more conducive to collecting minor flow lines together to make a larger gully than exteriors (convexity), but obviously not exclusively that way.
