QUOTE (Stu @ Jul 30 2007, 11:45 AM) *
Does anyone else now think of Titan as a planet whenever they see images like this..?

Well, let's see:

Mercury, Uranus, Neptune

Io, Europa, Titan, Triton

No... Titan is too interesting to be a planet.

This is probably just a bad alignement between two cropped images from PIA09217 and PIA09180 (the upper right portion of the island), if not this miserable pixels give the impression that something happens fast down there... smile.gif
I added some marks just to indicate that there are some features remaining in the same place and others get completely out of it:
Attached File  comparison3.wmv ( 403.94K ) Number of downloads: 349

If someone could make a decent gif out of those two releases that would be great.

It's too interesting for whether it's a planet or not to matter.

They've just posted a topographic map of the T28 swath...

PIA10353: Topographic Map of Titan's North Polar Region

Lakes are low, hills are high! All is well.

Am I interpreting the color scale correctly in that the deeper lakes could be on the order of 300 meters deep?

Emily's awesome detailed blog entry on Topography on Titan: http://www.planetary.org/blog/article/00001385/

[Bonus trailer: In the S polar projection of the cumulative RADAR Swaths you can see the recently acquired T41 RADAR Swath with wonderful hints of Hotei Arcus, Huygens Landing Site, and the Sliced Carrot]

Looking at that topographic map there seems to be an awful lot of releif within some of the inferred lake boundaries. Maybe parts of them actually look like this (minus the birds!):
http://www.batiquitos.org/images/mudbird.jpg

Gordan, as I understand it we can't be seeing more than a few tens of metres through the liquid so if there's more relief than that showing then some of it has to be high and dry(ish). Presumably a rather pure organic 'mud' would look almost as dark to radar as standing liquid.

Hmmm, I reckon you'd get a lot of radar backscatter from all those birds.... tongue.gif

...and if those birds happened to fly past Omacatl Macula on their way up there... sad.gif

Yeah, but actually they're not birds, just bits of self-organising foamy mucus. Looking like birds must help them survive for some bizarre reason. smile.gif
