Their 'arguments' aren't even worth debunking, really. I just say 'LOL' when I see such comments.

You're right! I think they will even be some people that will NOT watch Phoenix landing this week-end!

So far I only found some Japanese webpages:

Looking forward to see the other Apollo landing sites as well:

Fantastic picture, Ian - it deserves to be a LPOD.

Thanks Phil! smile.gif Based on your compliment/suggestion, I'll happily submit the mosaic to Chuck for possible inclusion in the LPOD. In addition, I have a PNG version you're welcome to have should you fancy using it in the next vesion of your lunar atlas.

In the meantime, here are similar views for Apollos 16 and 17:

Apollo 16 (crop of a single frame):

Apollo 17 (mosaic of two frames):

The LRV is visible in the Apollo 16 frame, but frustratingly just out of view in the 17 mosaic.

Ian.

Ian, your images of the Apollo sites are great. I may use them, but it will be a long time - about 10 years - before i return to the moon, as i have a lot of other places to deal with first - the whole inner solar system. Do you have anything similar for the earlier Apollos?

Well, Phil, I can tell you that there are no such animals for Apollos 11 and 12. The DAC failed to run during Apollo 12's lunar liftoff, and Apollo 11's DAC wasn't started until after pitchover.

I'm still amazed that, with the number of times the movie cameras failed during Apollo, that they worked fine during every single landing. There are no lost landing approaches from Apollo, all are safely recorded for posterity.

Phil and Doug -

I've decided to start a new thread dedicated purely to Apollo images and related discussion:

http://www.unmannedspaceflight.com/index.p...ic=5160&hl=

Phil, I didn't realise that the next edition of your lunar atlas wouldn't be out for another ten years. What with Kaguya and LRO coming up, it may have to be a two-volume second edition!

Doug, I think it's a great shame that the DAC was removed from the Apollo 17 surface operations. 16mm film of the rover deployment and traverses between stations could have been some of the greatest footage shot during Apollo. Also, it's a great shame that the Apollo 12 ascent sequence didn't get recorded, even though it very likely wouldn't have had Surveyor in the field of view anyway.

Ian.

Ian, just to be more specific... there is talk at Cambridge of a paperback version of this edition in a couple of years. I don't know if it will allow me to correct or update anything (there is a list of corrections, 7 so far, on my atlas web page). Right now I'm finishing my map of Eros, and then I will work on an atlas of exploration of Venus and Mercury. That's already begun, and will take 2 or 3 years. Then it's Mars - I decided to do Venus and Mercury first to allow a bit more of MSL and ExoMars to happen. But Mars is going to be big, so it may be a 2 volume thing, about 3 years each, before Mars Express and after. (I'm anticipating 100 pages or more just on MER). Then I can return to the Moon about 2017. There - that's my career all mapped out.

On LPOD today, there is a fantastic perspective view of the interior of Tycho constructed from Kaguya's Terrain Camera images. There is also a link to a flyover of Tycho. Great stuff!
