Maybe not political correct but Spirit is my favourite rover...it has always been... smile.gif
Secretly (well..not anymore...) I hope our baby at Gusev crater to be the last to wave goodbye...
man! How is it possible that I got all emotional writing this?! blink.gif
We are sick people I know... rolleyes.gif

I think they're just doing a systematic survey of the IDD nearfield during the winter to see if the wind moves stuff across the surface, or the vehicle itself settles.

The rovers have a way of stealing the spotlight from each other. Months from now
you may feel sorry for Opportunity as we watch in rapt attention as Spirit approaches
the interesting features south of Home Plate.

I certainly hope for that, too. Unfortunately, while I have every confidence in Spirit's ability to survive the winter and continue performing valuable science, I have to wonder about her ability to rove. Can she get to those features without having to "drag the anchor" through sand? Beyond that, is the Promised Land still under consideration as a long term target? Maybe this should be a whole new thread.

Even.
Spirit has beaten the hard terrain separating her form the hills.
She has taken the hills.
She left the hills.
She reached Home Plate.
She is facing El Dorado.
She is as close as we could get from Von Braun and Goddard...
She is...beautiful...strong...resistent...
She is my beloved one.
No imaginary crater can beat that.
I'll have Spirit's adventure in my thoughts when I leave this planet, strong but truly tru thoughts from this friend of yours.

This sums it all:

Gaily bedight,A gallant night
In sunshine and in shadow,
Had journeyed long,
Singing a song,
In search of El Dorado.

I have always favored Spirit simply because Gusev more visually intriguing than Meridiani. I am reasonably confident that it will survive the winter and go to Von Braun, which is of course close by. Beyond that, I wonder about its mobility and its ability to survive another winter - if it gets permanently stuck somewhere with the wrong solar panel tilt, it's a goner. Meanwhile, I am excited about the fact that if all goes well, we will have three spacecraft operating on another planet's surface for the first time.

Just think what it would be like to wander around here on foot, at leisure, picking up rocks like this one...

Couple of pics from today's offerings...

Are there a couple of meteorites down there in those wheel tracks at the bottom..?

... and a lovely view of the slopes...

I'd put up with the pressure suit to spend time in a geological playground like this one, Ted! smile.gif

I'd love to be there suit and all although it would be nice to remove it in the Mars habitat.

The rocks in the tracks could be meteorites or vesicular basalt, hard to tell.
Keep up the rocky pictures Stu

Spirit
sits,
dusty,
power-deprived,
shifting slightly now and then
as a few stolen moments
let her look at
and taste
her rusted
home.

Quiet,
but not
silent.

Not
being
discussed,
but
never
forgotten.
