I'm having my first colonoscopy this Wednesday and this thread topic title suddenly came to mind. I guess I'm a little preoccupied! Sorry, hope Doug will forgive me!

Please resist the urge to produce panoramas based on individual frames from the colonoscopy video.

I was 'in' (i.e. filming and recording laparoscope feeds ) on 5 laparoscopic procedures earlier in the year. The surgeon in charge is a complete IT nut, and between two procedures I was talking about panoramas and stitching pictures. We wondered if it would work in an inflated abdomen. So he 'panned' around the peritoneal cavity with the scope so I could pull stills of. The end result is a stunning mosaic with a 'roof' of the abdominal wall, and a 'floor' of small bowel. Sadly, confidentiality etc dictates I can't share the results - but it was fascinating. Infact, watching a donor kidney getting put in a plastic bag and pulled out of a keyhole incision with an audible comedy 'pop' is probably one of my top five 'what the hell' moments of my life.

"An audible pop"? Ewwwwwwww... blink.gif

Don't worry, Ilbasso. I just had one done last month, never felt it, don't even remember it. The technology's come a very long way.

About 15 years ago as part of a VA thing for Desert Storm vets I had the unique pleasure of being strapped to a Magic Tilt-O-Whirl table, filled with what felt like about fifty pounds of barium and then spun around at various angles, including upside down, while the doc watched my glowing gut on a flouroscope.

Longest hour of my life; I'd take TEN colonoscopies before doing that ever again.

I went through that procedure 4 years ago. It's not bad... because you don't remember a thing about it. Assuming your procedure is the same as mine, you are not anesthetized. Instead, a memory-blocker is used, as you must be awake and responsive during the procedure. I may have been squealing like a little girl while it was going on, but if so, no one mentioned it, and I certainly don't recall it. So I assume I was very stoic. rolleyes.gif

The strange part occurs when the drug wears off. I remember coming back to consciousness, and asking the nurse who was there about the results, if I had a clean bill of health. She responded politely and with a smile that I was fine. My wife then leaned over to me and said, David, that's the third time you have asked her that.

It's bizarre that I was functioning rationally, asking coherent and logical questions, but having no memory at all of doing so, until the third time I had asked.

Good luck!

I'm not worried so much about the procedure as the prep! Doesn't sound like it will be fun. Perhaps I can get a lot of reading done in the Fortress of Solitude.

That's the fourth time you've posted this story.

I've had a colonoscopy before, which was more or less a total breeze, except that the laxative I'd taken beforehand hadn't fully worked... ohmy.gif

However, the proctoscopy the previous week was FAR worse, especially since I was fully conscious while the doctor inflated my lower intestine with air (just like a balloon). Took me hours to get all of that air out afterwards... laugh.gif

The Dawn of Humor (possibly a deleted scene from 2001 in an alternate Universe, and please forgive me, Sir Arthur, wherever you are...)

SCENE: A fire in an outdoor setting, with two primitive men sitting on rocks on its perimeter.

MAN 1: Bzraaaaaaapppppppp!

MAN 2 (smiles): Huh!!! Huh huh huh huh huh huh huh huh huh....

(Music rises to triumphant crescendo as the first laughter is heard on Earth...)

It's gotta be in our very genes by now... rolleyes.gif
