Spirit's brushed the rock it stopped near yestersol
Looks a HELL of a lot like adirondak to me! - compare the MI image of the Adirondak brushing 11 months ago... With the brushing of this rock... YEah yeah - ok - they're TOTALLY different - but I'm not a geologist - makes an interesting comparison however. I assume this will be the weekend stop-over. Doug |

You beat me to it, Alan. I noticed the MIs of the newly brushed rock just after my last post to this thread. I was wondering what the new target would be called.
Wishstone 2 will work for me, until we learn its given name. This rock really has an appearance and texture that is very similar to that of Wishstone. The following image is in a little better focus. http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/spirit/mi...69P2977M2M1.JPG I can't discount bubbles, Pando. But right now I am leaning toward lapilli, or droplets of impact melt, mixed with impact or other fragments. Without the spectral data supplying the other pieces of the puzzle, it's really tough to interpret these images. But the good news is, Spirit is up to the task. -------------------- ...Tom

OK...then I guess I'm not sure what you mean. But, I still don't think I see bubbles.

(Somewhere back in the dim recesses of Cosmic's conscience, a light begins to flicker.)
Ahah...! Bubbles it is. Thanks. -------------------- ...Tom

I could swear I heard Steve Squyres refer to that rock in today's briefing as "Champagne."
He also said that explosive (I assume that means volcanic) or impact origins are highly suspected. He indicated those hypotheses were based on the fact that these rocks were composed of very angular, poorly sorted grains. I was curious that he didn't mention the unusually contorted grains. The other important point I caught was that he said Spirit was in an area of these kinds of rocks, which means the bedrock is likely nearby, and that these were not just a couple of anomalous boulders. -------------------- ...Tom

Nothing @ the exploratorium for a few days. Is it a case of restricted sols w.r.t the guy who runs the public outreach script
Tempting to jump to bad conclusions - but experience shows that the exploratorium is nothing if not erratic, unpredictable and unrelated to actual goings on Doug |

They didnt say there were any problems at all with either rover at yesterdays press briefing - so i'm assuming it's just a delay.

I believe Spirit is currently in restricted sols and is experiencing some increased dust in the atmosphere... Interesting that they didn't mention the dust storms, they probably ran out of time and had more important things to talk about
Oppy is still investigating the heatshield by doing an MI mosaic, and then it will head out to the big piece to look at the reflective material close-up. Then it's off to Vostok. |

Hey Pando, can you update us as to the plan for the next few sols?
Also I take it the plan is to go up to Larrys lookout take a look see and spy some good science targets? Thanks John |

IIRC was the plan not to switch to a 7 day work week from January if the rovers were in good shape?
