Well transcribing foreign words into chinese can be rather hilarious too. I once met a man called MacLean who did much business in China, so he had to have visiting cards in chinese. His name was transcribed as ma-keling which he claimed means "the horse that corrupts morals". I don't know if it's true, but "ma" does mean horse.
