With the recently cleaned solar panels, Spirit should not need to run to an optimal winter slope for a while. If Spirit is not able to extract herself from her current location before, let's say, Earth's October, will she be able to survive the next Martian winter? In other words, does Spirit need to extract herself and rove to another north-facing slope to ensure her survival, or can she remain in this interesting sandbox through the next Martian winter?
I really hoped to see her move to VB this season, but that seems to be unlikely. -------------------- ...Tom

As far as I can tell, all of the Calypso Pan images are now down in full. Thanks for the heads up Completed Calypso panorama QUOTE does Spirit need to extract herself and rove to another north-facing slope to ensure her survival, or can she remain in this interesting sandbox through the next Martian winter? I believe Roverdriver has said that Spirit could survive the winter at this location |

Apart from surviving the actual dust storm period, wouldn't the winds here prevent dust accumulation, or at least quickly remove it, so the rover is still in good shape for winter?

If the number of dust devils is any indication of the amount of wind I wouldn't count on that. I don't recall seeing dust devils after the major dust storm was over.

Interesting comments in the latest free spirit update:
QUOTE The team expects to drive the test rover for several hundred meters... worth of wheel rotations over the course of a week or more without starting over. Steering direction will be changed several times during the run. I assume what they mean by "without starting over" is without repacking the soil and repositioning the rover. I'm sure they don't mean they'll drive the wheels continuously for a week or more! Also, QUOTE Based on test results, the team might begin sending driving commands to Spirit during the second week of September.

I think 100's of metres of wheel turns might equate to a metre of real movement ?

With Spirit stuck in one place for so long, maybe this would be a good opportunity to take several HIRISE images of it, and combine them in a super-resolution image to see how good an image can be obtained by the super-resolution technique.
On second thoughts, though, once Phoenix thaws out, it will make a better candidate for super-resolution images. |
