These things happen.
I remember PIONEER 11 Titan data.... one of the priorities was to get a measure of the day/night temperature difference. Back in 1979, we did not know if Titan had a thick nitrogen/methane atmosphere or a thin methane atmosphere. A thick atmo would have smoothed the temperature difference. That crucial data was lost due to , I believe, interference from a Russian satellite. SO... we had to wait another year for Voyager to tell the tale. I do not know if this data can be retrieved in a later flyby on the XXM if approved... certainly the SAR will not care if the south pole is lit or not. Just one of those heart rending glitches. Mission teams and scientists dust themselves off and go on. As do we layman. Nothing can ever be guaranteed. Be glad for the this magnificant mission..... Craig |
