Are there any UMSFers with advice for someone moving from the UK to Brisbane, Australia?

Don't burn your feet on the beach sand. This happened to a guy I know's kids. He eventually came back to the UK as the weather was just too damn hot.

Britain shares with Australia a love of salty yeast based viscous foodstuffs ending in 'mite'. Ours is better of course! laugh.gif

Both are fun to feed to unsuspecting Americans... laugh.gif

That love it/hate it ad campaign was really on to something.

I don't eat much of it these days anyway. I do eat a lot of natural peanut butter though - good source of healthy fats.

From my preliminary research (read: quick googling) I don't think there's much planetary/space stuff to look at in the SE QLD area (long long way from cool places in other parts of the continent like Canberra DSCC, Woomera, Gosses Bluff etc). There's an impact crater in SW QLD but it's not visible at the surface. I might go visit the little planetarium near Mount Coot-tha.

FWIW, every non-native I've ever known who has lived in Australia has absolutely loved it. I recently applied for a job in Melbourne myself, and my odds of getting this particular position are roughly equivalent to my odds of being transported to Mars via a random quantum fluctuation; they normally get several hundred applications for these jobs, all from US citizens.

Besides apparently being a machine, my GF is Australian-born, loves Vegemite. We do Vegemite and banana on toast -- mmm!

Vegemite and banana!!! Brellis you evil dude.
Now, as for vegemite and tomato smile.gif yum!

SFJCody...no one in Australia actually thinks that anywhere is a long way from anywhere.
Distance, hah, that means nothing to we Aussies wink.gif
You should send us to Mars, it looks like the outback anyway (except for the lack of kangaroos laugh.gif )

My advice, for anyone considering coming to live in Australia...YES, DO IT!
All UMSF'ers have a standing invitation to come and visit me in Canberra and take my DSN 50cent tour.

Brisbane is a slightly more 'relaxed' lifestyle. I'd put it in the same category as Florida or Brighton wink.gif

Got that in Utah, too. Must be a desolation thing. Moving here was the first time I'd ever heard "It's only a 10 hour drive." Utahns seemed determined to insist that the entire western US is within a reasonable day's drive.

Montana's that way too, and probably the entire Intermountain area of the West. Population centers are far apart & traffic's light, so it's easy to see how that outlook arises.

Huh. Guess I'd feel right @ home in Australia, then! smile.gif

If I'm ever near Canberra I will definitely take you up on that!

I've decided to leave a little telepresence rover behind in the UK. From next month onwards (volcano permitting), this will be my representative in the northern hemisphere.

This is surely what mankind has dreamt of since time immemorial, the ability to startle a pet dog from a distance of over 10,000 miles! laugh.gif
