There are 10,001 things that they need to 'remember' to do before launch. That particular thing will be on a job list, 15 check lists, a closeout checklist and 135 QA walkdowns. Probably smile.gif

QUOTE (KrisK @ Jun 10 2011, 01:54 AM) *
How true this reduction in performance can be? Do they really want to drive only 4.5km during first Martian year?

The difference between the requirement that can be proven and the capability that can actually be met can be as large as, to pick an example completely at random, the difference between sol 90 and sol 2626. That isn't to say that MSL will exceed requirements by the same factor--it won't. But it does stress that requirements (and the ability to meet requirements is what is reviewed) are not predictions.

I'd guess they'll mount it on the stand - bolt the wheels into the stowed position - then box it up for the flight to KSC.

Does the assembly team "ship" to Florida too? Surely not last goodbyes yet!
Does a whole new team take custody of the parts ?

I spoke to the ATLO lead ( Peter Illsley ) just outside SAF today 'You get to say goodbye soon!' 'No, I get to go to Florida'

Much of the team will travel east with the hardware.

Will the round black and white markers stay on the rover? Are they going to be used to confirm Curie's orientation using the cameras and software (onboard/on ground)?

They're actually etched into the metal components of the rover in some cases. They're not going anywhere.

I'd be carefull calling it 'Curie' though. Marie Curie is the flight-spare of the '97 Sojourner rover.

"Curry" is funny, but I have to say that I really like "Curie" as a nickname....I may have to start using that....

Sounds good, but the final added e contributes nothing to the pronunciation. Leaving it off would remove Doug's objection.

Or we could just call it Q. (It would save a lot of typing.)

Definitely some desk-top material here!

Do anybody know how the wheel buggy will be set up for landing? - I guess there will be some kind of "give" programmed into it, so it can flex and contract. But how exactly will it be done? - Will the electro-motors provide the resistance?

I think Curio might work, but that's a little long. Cur, as in cure?
