Every now and then 'Mars Rover-like' vehicles appear in movies and advertising.
I spotted this one used in an ad for the Peugot 3008. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOw3jKoHqEY Ouch, that hurts!!! |

I've seen that ad here on various European TV channels too. Sort of annoyed about it. We should send a letter of complaint about it to Peugeot .

Does this lot think that it is the end of the drive East?????!!!!
(This has appeared in several places but probably easiest to access it here) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7y48pn0SnRs Should we be pleased that Oppy is so successful and rates so highly in mainstream awareness that this is a backhanded compliment or should UMSFers, and other interested parties, see this as a slap in the face and vigourously protest?????? Final cryptic comment: If Steve Squyres, Jim Bell - or any of the Mars Rover team - drive Peugots they may be best placed to extrapolate on the validity of the claims made in this clip and perhaps even reverse or overturn (so to speak) the results claimed!!?? |

I don't think it's worth watching ... much less getting upset over.

Crass. Thanks for bringing it to everyone's attention--it does at least indicate how the MERs have permeated popular culture--but IMO enough said about it, esp. on this particular thread. (The admins may decide to move it to the Chit Chat section if anyone wants to talk about it.)

ADMIN: Yes and we did move it from the 'Drive East' thread to here.
The Rovers have been used in advertising and movies many times. As nprev said, let's see it as a positive that they have become so much a part of popular culture that they are seen in this way and regardless of the way in which they are used. |

Personally, any time I see anything even remotely resembling a Mars rover used in an advert it makes me smile, because it shows that they've become iconic, and aren't just known about by scientists, or Pot Noodle noshing nerds sat on their sofas watching "The Big Bang Theory"

I saw a model train display with the Sojourner rover tucked away in the background. This was in the Omaha, NE area about 10 years ago. The Lost in Space robot was peering out from behind a building 'watching' it. Nice vignette for those who looked close and saw it.
(model train layouts frequently have little humorous or otherwise significant details worked into the scenery) |

I'll agree with that, while I'm not impressed with either of the car adverts I've seen, there's also one for Holden (or Ford) with a family in a 4WD finding water on Mars before the MER inspired rover, but the one I'll always remember with a smile featured a version of the Pathfinder rover. It was for HP printers had Martians using a printer to run off pictures of empty desert which they used to hide their city from the rover... HP Printer Pathfinder ad on Youtube |

Hear, hear! I doubt that Peugeot offers an arm equipped with an MI or a RAT, even on extended option packages.

Hello,
Rovers are everywhere. This is part of a trailer, starring a rover called "rover" in the Spanish/British/American movie Planet 51, collecting samples of different rocks. The movie is quite funny, at least for kids. Well, sometimes rover gets very annoying - kind of funny pet. Rover finds a rock |
