New PI Perspective, (what a coincidence about Uranus orbit crossing and MESSENGER!):

(what a coincidence about Uranus orbit crossing and MESSENGER Alan reported this and a number of other interesting coincidences about three years ago. http://www.unmannedspaceflight.com/index.p...st&p=111614 Another coincidence is that Dawn's nominal end of mission is July 2015, right when NH should be at Pluto. --Greg |

Another coincidence is that Dawn's nominal end of mission is July 2015, right when NH should be at Pluto. So one mission at a dwarf planet ends while another one begins. Err, kinda. -------------------- 2011 JPL Tweetup photos: http://www.rich-parno.com/aa_jpltweetup.html

About two hours ago New Horizons crossed the magical border. New Horizons is now less than 2 000 000 000 kilometers from Pluto.

What is so special about this or indeed any other such "magical" number?

Ok, round number, no magical number.

As of Sunday, New Horizons is awake and proceeding nominally through the early portions of its hibernation wake up and HGA precession maneuver. I think a lot of us felt that way on Monday after the holidays Alan. I know it'll probably take a few more days before my HGA is pointing correctly. -------------------- If Occam had heard my theory, things would be very different now.

from the latest NH twitter
QUOTE Thinking waaay ahead, the NH team is studing an extended mission to follow on KB explorations with a deep heliosphere mission untill 2040! Yes!
This is in what I'm secretly hoping from beginning of this mission. Some new estimations about power availability in this time horizon (~2040)? -------------------- |

May be new estimations of instrument and spacecraft power consumption, too

another interesting tweet posted yesterday
QUOTE Did you know? NH has observed Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, & 2 big KBOs (Makemake and Haumea) using our LORRI camera? I don't expect them to be particularly exciting, but does anybody know when Makemake and Haumea obs were made? -------------------- I'm one of the most durable and fervent advocates of space exploration, but my take is that we could do it robotically at far less cost and far greater quantity and quality of results.

That is what is nice about being at the New Horizon's STM meeting. Both sets were taken on October 6, 2007. The Haumea set has yet to be fully analyzed.
