I think you can just start to see over the crater rim at the far left of this pic. It's much more noticable if you look at the next image in the pan.

I can't wait to reach Bonneville. I bet there's some really interesting geology down there. That impact probably punched a hole right through all this basalt to the original crater floor. I suspect we'll study this crater right up until 90 sols and the end of the mission. What more could there be to find in Gusev Crater? Nothing interesting I'll tell you that.

[Deep breath, everybody]
For something I'm working on, I wanted to find an image that captures the "Mars-ness" of the terrain. I dug back into the early Pancam images, and tried to find a picture that has a large filter set and an acceptable horizon view for my needs. I processed it up, and figured I'd post my efforts here. This seemed to be the best place to put it, since it was taken on Sol 55. If it offends anyone, let me know and I can remove it. It is important to "follow the water" and investigate older rocks as Spirit has done over the last few years. However it was also important to investigate the typical younger volcanic terrain around Spirit's landing site. What has struck me is how providential it was that Spirit landed so close to the Columbia Hills. There are so many other places in Spirit's landing elipse where Spirit would have been 10s of kilometers away from older hills. |
