Mobile phones such as the iPhone use a magnetometer as a digital compass - I wonder, could these devices be sensitive enough to detect disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field caused by geomagnetic storms?

How many mT would that translate too? The P/N for the iPhone chip is AK8973. Datasheets available online.
