Actually - the wheel tracks don't look parallel in that image- they're several degrees divergent as a result of the distortion of Navcam images into the vertical projection.

The descent stage flew away in the opposite direction that we drove - so the behavior on each side of the rover should be the same. Neither pair of impingement plumes is further from rover center. There is a difference in the total dust throw pattern to the ESE because of the flyaway - but that doesn't change the impingement patterns.

You're seing a reprojection issue....go look at the HiRISE image - you can see it's quite different to the distortion induced by the navcam reprojection http://www.uahirise.org/images/2012/detail...B.NOMAP-MSL.jpg

Just did a quick check in Photoshop--by my eye anyway it comes out to only 0.5 degree difference.

Regardless, even if, say, the descent stage flew straight up, doesn't the MARDI video show that the debris pattern from each plume went off in all directions, and in fact converged in a turbulent area in the middle, at least at some height? Easy to see how stuff would have rained down from that.

Outstanding. My request to have this printed to hang in the hallway outside my office is already in.

Yes Mcaplinger, I hope to do that myself, one day smile.gif.

I managed to add some sky in this panoramic, and I think it will be better for printing wink.gif And breathing, also (> implying we can actually breath on Mars).

Wow. Very nice job.

Adding MSSS to the credit line would be appreciated, though I think I'll hang it up as is anyway.

Nice work Ant, I see you worked at 50%, a very good idea! I'm working on the full resolution 360x180 (29212x14606) and it is taking *forever*!

These images look great! I think it would be interesting to see a version of this panorama that points the direction to some of the landmarks that we've seen from the MRO imagery (i.e. the heat shield, descent stage, back shell & parachute). It's already been determined that none of these are visible from Curiosity's vantage point, true?

Thank you all smile.gif. And especially Emily, for giving a place on her blog, twice smile.gif

This is done smile.gif. Tomorrow, I will do this to the full resolution non-skyed version of the panoramic (open and edit it with Gimp is pretty long…).

Desktop version of the pano, centered on Mount Sharp.

James : I love the way you inserted the caracters in your great version of this pan.

I am really blown away by both Damien's and James' versions of the pan. Thanks to both of you! Hopefully we'll continue to provide you with more and better raw material. I'm not sure we will ever send back a full 360 100mm pan (roughly 10 times more images than these) but if we do I'm sure you'll be up to the challenge!
