Funny that the Google Chat (Also on NASA TV) says ISON is at the expected brightness. Have they been looking at the latest C2 images?

Funny that the Google Chat (Also on NASA TV) says ISON is at the expected brightness. Have they been looking at the latest C2 images? I was wondering that myself. My first thoiught is that this is a delayed broadcast, but if they are taking questions live, it couldn't be. So either they have access to new data that has not hit the internet yet, or they are woefully unprepared. Or ISON is still at its expected brightness following its long-term trend, excluding its periodic outbursts. |

So either they have access to new data that has not hit the internet yet, or they are woefully unprepared. Or ISON is still at its expected brightness following its long-term trend, excluding its periodic outbursts. They've caught up now as they interviewed the Bad Astronomer guy who properly showed and explained the latest C2/C3 images The hangout is from the SDO control room, so they aren't directly watching SOHO as much. Now a report on comets-ml (Jakob Cerny) that the 1740 C2 image shows virtually no head and all tail. http://www.kommet.cz/datas/users/ison-failed-3_1.png The mystery on the hangout now is that nothing is visible on SDO images (as Paolo noted). STEREO-A at 1809UTC shows at least a long curving tail. -------------------- Steve [ my home page and planetary maps page ]

the comet is not visible in the SDO field of view... http://cometison.gsfc.nasa.gov/ True in UV channels, Paolo... however, In the visible light channel there is something interesting: luminosity enhanced version of AIA4500 image with enlarged detail (from 4k resolution) Could be a cosmic ray hit but could be also the remnant of the nucleus (at least 10 fragments)... -------------------- I always think before posting! - Marco -

It still looks bright???? I think it's normal, you are observing dust emitted hours ago from nucleus, now pushed away from solar radiation pressure, nothing directly connected to present nucleus position/existence... Last AIA4500 SDO image (1 hour after previous one) still show a single luminous object but I am not sure about it's nature (again, inset from 4k version was enhanced in luminosity): -------------------- I always think before posting! - Marco -

This is from the STEREO Ahead probe http://stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov/browse/2013/11...83924_d7c2A.jpg It still looks bright???? Yes, I've been looking at those. There definitely is SOMETHING still following ISON's projected orbital path, the question is whether it's an intact nucleus or a cloud of rocky fragments. I want to see the next several frames as they are released over the next hour or so, but it's certainly possible that ISON pulled another Lovejoy and will spring back to life as it departs the Sun. At least I hope so, I admit that it doesn't look good right now. |

Me too Mongo - I'll estimate that any remnants of the head should reach the C2 occulting disk with images taken around (or just before) 1930UTC. The new 1912UTC image isn't showing anything yet (on the due east side).

Yes it really look like 'something' is peeking out in that image. But yes, as for earlier comments I can see that some here must have noted that some astronomers thought that ISON would break up. In reply to the next post by xflare. Yup! | | V |

xflare, you got a screengrab to share? Site is getting hammered.
