The RMI mosaics go a lot further up the mountain - many of them - than just the dunes. I don't think all of them are Nathan's dune images. In some cases a mosaic may be extended down to give the dune coverage he needs, or there may be horizontal mosaics giving wider dune coverage, but some of the vertical mosaics must be about the mountain, including a preview of some of the potential access routes (Ameto and West Falls are two of those).

but some of the vertical mosaics must be about the mountain, including a preview of some of the potential access routes (Ameto and West Falls are two of those). http://www.hou.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2014/pdf/1367.pdf confirms Greenish' earlier suggestion that they are doing passive spectroscopy on the mountain: QUOTE This will be useful as additional measurements are acquired during the rover’s future examinations of hematite-, sulfate-, and phyllosilicatebearing materials near the base of Mt. Sharp that are spectrally active in the 400-840 nm region. Initial long-distance (> 4km) observations of this region show promising results, such as variations in near-infrared reflectance, which should assist in traverse planning. Seems likely they would take RMI images to go with that. |
