The color doesn't seem too far off as I see it, although a little more yellow would help. I tend to base my color on Mars stuff on directly obtained color data with instruments I am used too. Above is a collection of my own images of Mars from 2003, which I have used as a color guide for many Mars images I have produced with limited color information, including my current avatar.

Maybe some of you have already seen what I see in this Spirit's pancam image? The eastern wall of Gusev may be coming visible through the dust.
Note, it's very vaguely visible if at all. I don't mean the 'first' and 'second' outlines of the Thyra structures which stand out well enough, but a silhouette much above them.
(Tip: I see it quite well if I maximize the image and tilt back the Lcd of my laptop - the slanted position of the screen adding the contrast.)

I usually only begin with lower-resolution or smaller parts of the panoramas
because hand-colorization of such mere single-band b/w images is very time consuming.

What makes this so difficult:
Due to the lack of multi-band information you have to "create/guess" a unique
color shade in effect for every single pixel in order for the final image to avoid that "monochromatic look" which can be usually seen in automatically
colorized pictures.

Although I do use support of special (self written) software, the
process of colorization is still mostly manual handwork ...

Besides, I'm still struggling with the colors. On the one hand I'd like to
stick to the "real" authentic colors (as probably best documented by JPL's
radiance calibrated multi-band compositions ... unfortunately rather dull colors )
On the otherhand I'd like to make use of the "artistic freedom" of color choice
that the b/w colorization offers: So I'm usually ending up with way
too sappy red (but more beautiful than real wink.gif Colors...
but : as pointed out by tedstryk above: maybe in reality, Mars *is*
really that red, who knows smile.gif

Anyway, here is another "Symphony in Red"
that I've been working on for the past days
in full resolution:

the real artist was the little rover Spirit, who
by capturing this beautiful image of another world,
wrote "the melody" of that symphony ... wink.gif

I'm just trying to re-play it in a different note key
on my color-instrument wink.gif

Hi Nirgal, looks really artistic, like hand painted. Very nice, particularly you get a good sky this time. I would like to see the entire pan with the sun and this sky. You've almost already done with it. smile.gif

p.s. From the millions that you'll get with it should you deliver me... mmhh 30 percent, agree? tongue.gif

Nirgal. I'm very impressed with your hand-colouring skills. Perhaps you could take a swing at coloring one of the images from the surface of Titan (not many pixels to assign a colour value on those pics). I didn't like the ESA treatment which was simply to overlay the agregate colour recorded. I have seen better versions (props to Kevin Dawson), but nothing thats really grabbed me and made me say thats the one. Plenty of room for interpretation, single channel images and all that. I imagine pale ice blocks reflecting an orange sky on a dark brown beach.

If you do decide to have a bash at the pic, bung the result on the titan board as a new topic so we can admire your work.

Very low resolution indeed.. the raw image has only 384x192 pixels sad.gif
And I too didn't like the ESA colors at all smile.gif

So I did this quick one... not quite that easy because now we
almost have too *few* pixels to play with, but nevertheless ..

Don't have an account on the Titan board yet ...
will post the image there too smile.gif

Great job, Nirgal! Not only is there a broader range of colour, suggesting compositional differences, but surface details are also significantly enhanced. For instance, that sinuous feature cutting into the darker material in the centre of the photo is barely noticeable in the ESA versions.
