QUOTE (elakdawalla @ Nov 20 2005, 02:06 AM) Huh. Do you suppose that translates to "Hayabusa is caught on the ground on Itokawa, whose rotation has carried it to the reverse side" of the asteroid? Can anybody translate the Japanese more directly? --Emily Suzuka, a japanese guy from uplink.space.com, translate it with "HAYABUSA seems to have turned to the other side in the rotation of ITOKAWA while caught to the ITOKAWA's ground. " I'm not sure Hayabusa was designed to survive on the surface. Rakhir |

The latest Google-ified post from Matsuura Shin:
QUOTE 8:51:04 Mark river professor appearance. There is no change in circumstance. There is no reaction for the command of rise and the safe mode entering which were transmitted from Usuda. As usual, not be able to verify Doppler conversion. Unless the ground two-way communication establishes, it cannot detect Doppler displacement, (Matsuura note: Doppler conversion is detected with the signal from the ground as a オウム return, probably will be). However, because entered to the shadow, the beacon continuing, being able to receive the landing point is in spite, considered as the earth, there is no possibility of having stuck to the I To matte surface. Presently being able to receive the beacon of mean and others it is, but it is the circumstance which does not accept the command from the ground. In order that presently, two-way communication is established with the low gain antenna, in the midst of effort. Some time ago, from beacon * mode, the command which is changed to telemetry * mode was transmitted. As for the result being produced, in addition 32 minutes later. I wonder who Mark river professor is? -------------------- My website - My Patreon - @elakdawalla on Twitter - Please support unmannedspaceflight.com by donating here.

Well... I hope we were getting images all the way down. The images and other remote sensing data are enough for me to be very happy with this mission already.
Since I assume we won't get anything else on the blog, this is my composite image with the one last view added. Images courtesy JAXA-ISAS. Oh - and we are doing much better out of this mission than with SMART-1! Phil -------------------- ... because the Solar System ain't gonna map itself.

http://smatsu.air-nifty.com/ Prof. MATOGAWA says, Situation has not still changed. They send to "RISE command" & "be Safe mode command" by beacon, but he did not answer. but HAYABUSA's beacon come. it mean that HYABUSA did not clash to ITOKAWA They try to change ftom beacon mode to telemetory mode. Thank you for the update foe, I still follow this with interest though its getting very late for me. Sunday morning 9.40 in Japan now, so I guess both news will be arriving and some attemps might be made as soon as all staff are back, good luck to all involved.

Another Google-ified update from Matsuura Shin:
QUOTE O'clock of 9 two-way communication recovered in 32 minutes. It has not entered into safe mode.
Two way communication is established! At 9:32 JST. Before the that, 9:36:04 Mark river professor appearance. Landing to the North Pole of the I To matte, the theory has emerged whether it is not to be caught. While verifying, with you explain this theory. From the reporter, " with, with the streaming Kawaguchi something has explained with smiling face ", it was asked, was flurried and kept appearing in verification. " When being attached has changed, well is, while... " with saying. Provisional time appeared. Morning o'clock of 5 46 minutes: With the high-level 40m, you verify target marker discharge. Because this is terrestrial time, really these 16 minutes. Morning o'clock of 5 55 minutes: You verify that the laser range finder measured the high-level 17m. -------------------- My website - My Patreon - @elakdawalla on Twitter - Please support unmannedspaceflight.com by donating here.

I hope the telemetry that has been (and possibly will be) received will be deterministic - able to tell us whether Hayabusa was stuck, unable to fire ascent engine, or if the specific impulse is not sufficient to lift Hayabusa from Itokawa.

Here, at 8:18 pm (New York Time), now Tokyo is 10:18 am Sunday 20. I see the Hayabusa' Team is still working according to JAXA TV. It looks like that they are analyzing the data or waiting for something.
I am not sure about the Hayabusa present status. The Hayabusa Live last update was 5:40 am JSP when it was hovering above than 90 meters. It sounded like that the Hayabusa has already landed or not? Rodolfo |

Rodolfo:
Operators continue receiving the beacon signal from Hayabusa. Thus Hayabusa is not on the surface of Itokawa, it is somewhere near Itokawa. Two-way communication using Hayabusa's low gain antenna has been just recovered. Operators switched from beacon mode to telemetry mode. They have been able to confirm that the spacecraft has not entered into safe mode, something it was ordered to do earlier today. It does not look good, evidently something went wrong. Fingers crossed for Hayabusa! |

Can I just say how frustrating and disconcerting this is? Especially watching a live image from the control room in Japan and trying to read the body language of the people as they go in and out.

Now 8:53 pm (New York Tim) 10:53 am in Tokyo
Now the control room is half empty with around 9 persons. All of them are calm. It seems like that they are waiting for some signal from Hayabusa. This deduces me that there are still no special news. Let us suppose that if there is something special, I am sure that this room would be crowded so everybody want to hear and see any good news. Let us cross fingers so the thing won't be happing nothing serious and just let us for another try with that glitching communications experience. Rodolfo P.S. 9:06 pm (NY Time). The session of JAXA.TV has been terminated. |

I agree with Phil. This has been a pretty cool mission all around. There must be bucketloads of useful data and higher res. images they haven't shared yet.
Whatever the outcome from here, these guys get high-fives from me. -------------------- If Occam had heard my theory, things would be very different now.

QUOTE (ElkGroveDan @ Nov 20 2005, 03:09 AM) And me. We've been quite critical of JAXA in the past but even if it all goes t%&@s up at this point it has still managed to vastly improve our understanding of (this type of) asteroid. Not only that but I really think that we should acknowledge that they really are trying to provide a public outreach component and for all that it may be a bit frusrating they are getting the info to us fairly rapidly. We have folks in this forum watching this from all over the globe (Japan, Australia, Europe, US for certain) in very close to real time, warts and all. I am very gratefuly that we are being allowed ot share in this genuine spirit of exploration and adventure. bv |
