I hope they wait a bit before they give it a last try. I suspect it will fail. However, recall the fact that Minerva is supposed to pass Itokawa on the 25th, and may serendipitously land. If it does, even if it is out of contact, it would be interesting to look around for it. Otherwise, it might end up on the surface without us ever knowing!

I predict that not only will they successfully grab a sample and return it unharmed to Earth, but that Minerva will land on the asteroid intact and transmit useful data while roaming around and poking things.

QUOTE (Sedna @ Nov 21 2005, 12:39 AM) I predict the Mars Polar Lander will come alive on Christmas Day and call home. By April 1st a bolt of lightning will strike Pathfinder and charge its batteries causing it to signal the DSN that it is alive and well, albeit a bit dusty. -------------------- If Occam had heard my theory, things would be very different now.

While we're at it, let's aim for the stars: I predict that by 2020, the US will have come to its senses and eliminated its manned space program.

Eliminate it or give it some direction that has some connection to exploration instead of this great "Voyage from Earth to the Area A Few Hundred Miles Above The Earth" -------------------- |

QUOTE (foe @ Nov 21 2005, 05:32 AM) Good evenig! Haha , I hope so. but I have other job. I was going to today. So, I can't help you on 25th (Fri.) I found a good link instead of me. http://5thstar.air-nifty.com/blog/ Good night! From fifth star: "By integrating the descent rate, the amount of the descent looks like the spacecraft went inside Itokawa. This is a tentative number and not conclusive. It actually did not go inside Itokawa. There is a possibility as the spacecraft moves horizontally with the rotation of Itokawa that we might have this kind of data. Rationally." Intrguing. 'Moving with the rotation of Itokawa' is evidence Hayabusa was in contact. So why didn't the sample horn sample? The excessive heating is also interesting. There is no convective cooling in the vacuum of space, so many circuits, especially those controlling motors and actuators, are susceptable to overheating when duty cycles exceed expectations. |
