Matsuura's blog.

At 8:40 a.m., a V signature of matokawa was broadcasted at a live broadcasting camera.
They confirmed that a program for sample collection started at least.

In a pressroom, we said. "That is not a victory signature". It may be the meaning that it does more twice

Matsuura's blog says the sampler device functioned properly and the subsequent ascent phase seemed just fine as well. This is probably as good confirmation as we can get. I guess we can celebrate for their achievement.

Now, thru the live TV, the command room is getting even more crowded. There might be some important announcement....

Matsuura reports that people are still a bit cautious: 'It might not mean victory. Look, he'll be willing two more trials.' tongue.gif

Oh, another update...
Hayabusa has fired the bullet.

That means, the sampling horn did touch something and Hayabusa tried to collect samples...!

That's good enough for me - time to crack open the LIPOTIVAN-D, cheers!

Is there any way to confirm if any matirial has indeed been collected? It would be heart-breaking to think that it has, only to find out otherwise when the capsule is opened back on earth!

Well, now I have an inquietant question....

Does the Japanese people shout or embrace someone when they get a good news such as the Hayabusa's successfull collection of samples or not? unsure.gif

The american team does it very effusively when any spacecraft (unmmaned or manned) have got the aim.

With regards to the "can they tell for sure material has been collected" question, apparently the collection horn does have some sort of sensing mechanism that only triggers when matter is inside (exactly how it detects this I'm not sure). Barring an actual camera inside the horn which we humans can view back on Earth, this is as good as it gets. We'll just have to wait and see..

In fact, no. There is nothing on board that can verify that. They assume material to be collected, if the bullet was fired and the probe's attitude was properly oriented. So I guess what they will verify next is the detailed attitude history of the probe. I am not sure if there is any sensor on the sampler horn's movement.

EDIT: (clarification) if memory serves, the sampler horn simply detects the contact and the bullet gets fired.
