Wonderful, thanks dilo!
I little wonder about that Spirit was able to shoot such a picture without reflection. For comparison sol 476: http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/spirit_p476.html Is the answer that sun is shaded enough at this lower position to shoot such a great sunset. Or did they found the exact exposure time. -------------------- |

Or did they found the exact exposure time. I think answer is mainly related to low Sun position, because is not the first portrait of this kind from Spirit: ![]() Anyway, I made a lot of work in order to stitch the 3 original images in a unique color view; result still not perfect due to different time of shots (about 200sec between each direction) causing different sky shading... also foreground match is poor (but issue do not appear until touching lumosity/contrast/gamma in order to see dark terrain features). Probably, you or other skilled guys in the forum can do better! However, I think mosaic appear impressive, so I post it below. Note that here I didn't changed overall luminosity or color mix of original images... Please, enjoy!

Breathtaking!

Do I see a 'Sun Tower' in that Spirit sunset shot (the first one)? On Earth, we'd be talking about high-altitude ice crystals causing it - I wonder if it's the same on Mars?

And so far the two L2 and L5 frames are still downsamples (also other of the whole sunset). That still give dilo's work a special rating score!
Probably they find it wonderful too and take it still across as full resolution. -------------------- |

On Earth, we'd be talking about high-altitude ice crystals causing it - I wonder if it's the same on Mars? I think is a Sun tower, based also on bluish color... not sure if crystals are made of water ice! On the other hand, also in the official MER site they tell how "twilight images are occasionally acquired by the science team to determine how high into the atmosphere the martian dust extends, and to look for dust or ice clouds": http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/pre.../20050511a.html Anyway, thanks to all people who kindly appreciated these images... I absolutely agree with dot.dk about MER fabulous accomplishment... sometimes, I really think a single image could pay an entire space mission! (I know is an exageration, but surely you can understand what I mean! -------------------- I always think before posting! - Marco -

[quote=Bob Shaw,May 23 2005, 10:29 AM]Do I see a 'Sun Tower' in that Spirit sunset shot (the first one)? Not if this is the same image as seen at: http://www.donaldedavis.com/2004%20new/newer/MER2SSET.jpg Which I created using frames from this sequence: http://qt.exploratorium.edu/mars/opportuni...00P2679L5M1.JPG A good RGB view was obtained, and after some Photoshop manipulation to regester the sun images I 'mirrored' the entire image and hand removed the 'missing' central strip. I stopped just short of 'perfect' match in this work, as one has to move on sometime in non paying work. There is no 'sun tower' deliberately shown in the image, and I guess i'll have to revise the work sometime more carefully. There was one sunset sequence which briefly fooled me into thinking a nice halo had been imaged, but it was only a detection of an out of focus incompletely positioned filter wheel! Don |

QUOTE (Deeman @ Jun 5 2005, 03:02 PM) Interesting results, Deeman! The sky color matching between different images is very good and the dark foreground terrain details are well visible by reducing contrast and increasing luminosity: a result clearly better than mine! However, I cannot explain the bright halo around the Sun, some kind of asymmetric "flou" effect... -------------------- I always think before posting! - Marco -
