Hello, this is the flightdirector update for Thursday February 26th. My name is Jessica Collisson and today I am the flight director for Opportunity.
This morning on Opportunity our plan is to pick up with the Mossbauer integration activity where we will read out that data from the Mossbauer and then position the Instrument Deployment Device so that we take 3 micro-images of the area that we had placed the Mossbauer instrument down and we are hoping to capture the imprint of that area.
After that is complete we will stow the arm and get ready to do what we call a bump activity, for we will drive the rover forward .15 meters today. And this is to target a interesting point which is just a little ahead of us, but not close enough that we could apply the appropriate amount of preload on the Instrument Deployment Device for the RAT activities that we are looking forward to doing. So when we do this bump today, we are actually going to overcommand it, because are sitting at about 13 degrees of overall tilt, pitched up and so we expect to see some slip on the rover, so we are going to command it .18 meters, but only expect to see .15 meters.
So once we are in position, we will take a new set of images, focussing on our new Rock Abrasion Tool target for tomorrows activities. And we will also complete a 360 dregree NavCam panorama as well as focus our NavCams in the area of the crater that we are targetting to drive out of pretty soon here. We are starting to look at our exit strategy of this crater and get on to the open plains and start driving to our next target, which is further away.
Today, Spirit completed a similar sort of bump activity, where it drove forward .85 meters and when it was complete it actually unstowed its Instrument Deployment Device and brought it back kind of a little on the forehead to look at the magnets that we have up there. And so the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer instument was used and we also took some micro-images of those magnets to see how much dust we have been accumulating. So, exciting day on Spirit and we are looking forward to an exciting day at Opportunity today.
