Well, JPL has their own little page that describes the challenges, but it doesn't go into technical detail like ATSN....
The best part shows how far we've come:
Historical photo of an engineer coloring by numbers sent down by the Mariner spacecraft in the 1960s, when the first digital images were transmitted through space from Mars.
Though I guess digitally we are all still just "coloring by the numbers."
