Yes, this is a good idea. It will be interesting to see the maps evolve from just Mariner 10 through each of the Messenger flybys, to the final orbital phase.

We're going to see a brand new planet when those first Messenger images come in. Yeah, I think that's a truism based on experience. Seems like our initial flybys almost invariably miss the most interesting features of a given target for whatever reason... -------------------- A few will take this knowledge and use this power of a dream realized as a force for change, an impetus for further discovery to make less ancient dreams real.
