Looking at the Pancam site you can follow the slow progress with the big McMurdo pan. Usually they take 4 pointings per column (4 x 13 pictures). Columns 21 and 23 each have only 2 pointings. And column 24 (the most recent) has 4 again. Has anyone an idea why? Has the area of 21 and 23 already been imaged (IDD work volume?)? It can't be a power/data issue because they are now at 24.

Analyst

They image from the horizon to the solar panels. The number of images needed changes because of the varying height of the horizon (hills) and Spirit's tilt because of the slope she is on.

Great minds think alike eh, Ant. wink.gif I've been working on a new McMurdo version recently as well. I noticed that it's been nearly a month since my last update!

To sol 902 (91 pointings) - full resolution version is available. smile.gif

Enjoy,

James

I know. But two pointings (about 30 degrees) from the horizon to the solar panels seems not enough, even if the rover is tilted and there is no hill. But I could be wrong.

It may not seem like enough - but you can see for yourself in the images people have done, it clearly IS enough smile.gif The thing is on a slope as it is, so it's not suprising.

Great work Damien and James, I really like seeing both corrected and uncorrected versions of this pan. I haven't taken time for this pan myself but I see no need tongue.gif

Looking forward to the completion of this work!

Just 3 images missing for the complete 360 degree panoramic view

of the horizon at Low Ridge Haven.

Taken with the L2 pancam.

Updated colour 3D McMurdo pan smile.gif

846 raw images used to make this blink.gif - I'm beginning to question my sanity! laugh.gif

Only quarter of the full resolution as overlaying and aligning two ~100Mpixel images is a bit of a challenge for my computer! - I'll wait for the final version and just do it once.

Don't question your sanity yet..You've proven it's doable! ohmy.gif A precise color-anaglyph almost-360 pan.

Very real. A very real Mars you're showing us here IMO, thanks smile.gif

It's a strange 3D photo to look at because as you move towards the sides, your head has to start "tilting" like Spirit's pancam mast to keep the 3D effect!

Very good pano James wink.gif The 3D effect is great. I like particulary the left side of the pano. I agree Nico, we have the sensation to be ON Mars. smile.gif wink.gif

Some more SR images in the Pancam Super-Res project library...so I've found appropriate colour images to overlay the two.

these are twice the native pancam res, but half the res of the presented Super res images on the PC website - purely qualitatively, I think the improvement is about 50%...i.e. the resolving angular resolution has fallen by about a third.
