OMG YES and very timely! Thank you!!!

You're welcome. smile.gif If I hit the right buttons, this should update twice a day:

http://r.grythumn.org/~zarquon/nh/

I'll check to see if the midnight run happens.

(I think I've got wget set to avoid downloading the sorted versions of the directory listing. Will check the logs on the next run.)

Maps of Pluto and Charon updated with the new 2015-07-09 images obtained near 04:20. Longitude 0 is at the left edge of the maps.

The maps are rapidly getting better but there are still some areas from the images obtained on July 1 and 3 and they now suddenly look horribly low-res. The map of Charon still looks very crude.

Pluto keeps getting more and more interesting. Some of the terrain that earlier seemed to be of intermediate and relatively uniform brightness now seems to be breaking up into a complex collection of light and dark spots/terrain.

Charon shows the same banding pattern as Pluto!

I loaded the July 9 image into DS9, log scaled and displayed using colors to represent brightness.

Any chance that the blue fringe is the atmosphere?

And here are new rotation movies of Pluto rendered using the maps I posted a few minutes ago.

First Pluto - the animated GIF I made was slightly too big to upload here so I made an AVI file

Attached File  pluto_rot_movie_20150709.avi ( 201.5K ) Number of downloads: 914

And Charon:

In a way, Charon looks a bit similar to the Moon in this rotation movie. I think this will change once the resolution gets higher.

QUOTE (alk3997 @ Jul 10 2015, 02:00 PM) *
For those who might like to look for any 5-minute temporal changes, below is the first and last (third) 7/9 LORRI images. Only enhancement is a 2x enlargement.

I don't see any changes between the two images (this time).

For whatever it might be worth, my impression on viewing the product of the stereoscopic pair of images was that the 'whale' appears to be a deep depression with a bright spot at its bottom. It also appears to be fringed on the upper boundary by the ends of the light colored streaks, looking rather like eyelashes over an eye. These impressions could be illusory, of course.

Alan: "Any chance that the blue fringe is the atmosphere?"

That's what JPG does around sharp edges in an image.

That would be scattered/diffracted light in the optics.

I wonder if they are reacting to images not seen yet?
