I wonder if there's any published analysis of this, but it seems like a cosmic ray hit on the martian surface has a decent chance of coming from less vertical angles, too. The surface of Mars has lower pressure than the altitudes on Earth where cosmic rays typically hit atmospheric molecules, so a lateral (or diagonal) path into Mars's atmosphere might make it a long way before finally hitting a molecule. And, of course, there is much more angular area to the sides than strictly from overhead.

The geometry of impact depends on a few variables. The origin of the cosmic ray (the sun, our galaxy or extragalactic) meaning it can come from any direction, and the orientation of the sensor to the path of the ray. An encounter at a low angle of incidence will show as a spot on an image while the higher the angle of incidence the greater the probability of a streak.

My take on the Mastcam Right mosaic of Kukenán hill taken on sol 3520. I estimate its height to ~125 m.

Wow- wonder if that can be used to constrain the power law of Mars-quakes, sorta like "the balancing rocks" were used for US nuclear rod storage as 'proof' that the areas hadn't experienced any major seismic activity for eons... interesting point about using balancing rocks to confirm geological stability.. I've always had problems with anaglyph, or maybe its the cheap magazine glasses im using for the last couple decades, anyways here's that balancer from sol3518 in crossseye.. |

Oh yes, 'cross eye stereo' - my does that bring back memories. (My background was a BA heavy in physics, organic chem, and physical chemistry, then graduate studies in biochemistry & molecular biology.) I USED to be really, really good at being able to pick up journals or PNAS which always had cross-eyed images. Always seems a bit harder on a computer screen with a larger actual/arc-radial distance between images. BUT there's always the "3-stooges- Curly" option where you create a divider with your hand- |

Mosaic of 49 pictures taken on sols 3507, 3514 and 3520. Artifacts corrected, colors adjusted to calibrated products and sky extended.
That's quite a scenic view! -------------------- |
