Latest (untranslated) posting on air-nifty comes out per google as:

" It is quick the ぶ, link ": Concerning the speed measurement with the reason and the Doppler displacement which do not enter into safe mode 10:28:22 mark river professor appearances. First telemetry reaches in about rear 10 minutes. However the press conference which is planned in noon is unreasonable. Press conference when we would like to make tomorrow, must be as Kawaguchi professional Manet. From reporter side, summary of this day the in addition to professional Manet, we want doing press conference in a request that the る. Mark river professor: Something occurs comprehensively and high analysis probably is after the tomorrow. However, telemetry gets off, if was, when, the bullet of the sampler is discharged and understands high whether it grounded. As soon as to come out temporarily, we convey the result of telemetry. You think in Kawaguchi professional Manet we would like making operation devote. Telemetry in 40 minutes reaches in the ratio of 1 time. Perhaps, you think in 1 hour we can inform about a some information in ratio of one time. Concerning the reason which has not entered into safe mode. Like below you argue secretly. It is quick, the ぶ when trying landing in the I To matte, why fixed altitude (about the 10m) with as many as 30 minutes there was a time when it has remained, (Doppler displacement of the two ways you had lived it could not detect Doppler displacement in spite). Receiving the radiation from the I To matte surface this time, it is thought temperature rose rather. Because of this you think whether it does not mean that the communication equipment transitory has caused abnormality. Separated from the I To matte, it is quick the ぶ, when you think communication recovered by the fact that it becomes cold, coherence is agreeable. Concerning the speed detection with Doppler conversion. It is quick, the ぶ, it is quick the ぶ, two-way Doppler who measures one-way Doppler who is detected with the radio wave which is dispatched and the signal which is sent from the ground in the オウム return is used. It is quick, the ぶ frequency of the radio wave which is dispatched changes with the temperature of the communication equipment. Because of this unless it calibrates securely, measurement of high accuracy cannot do one-way Doppler. Speed of several cm/s is detected, the signal which understands completely is sent from this way, two-way Doppler who calculates Doppler displacement to a オウム return becomes necessary.

They are getting telemetory data now.
They will realize all things after tomorrow.

You're doing just fine - I wish I could speak Japanese as well as your English! Thank you for all of your help, it is a valuable contribution to the forum.

I'm getting tired myself, my 22 month old gets me up at 6am no matter the day of the week.

Good luck to "it is quick the ぶ" smile.gif

Maybe Itokawa is "weighting more now" than before (crash!?)

12:12 Prof. Matogawa again. "Now we keep contact with Hayabusa with medium gain antenna. We started the communication with low gain antenna and enabled the medium gain. We will receive the house keeping data such as whether the impactor has been injected, around 1 o'clock (04:00 GMT). We will also know whether Hayabusa touched down. I will come back immediately when I know." The media: "Then we will have a lunch break until 1 o'clock..." Matogawa: "No, I won't take a break. I don't know the entire picture but they (operation team) knows the whereabout of Hayabusa. It's not returned to the home position yet." He is still being interviewed by media as of 12:23.

I would crash the whole dawn Hayabusa thing against the asteroid, this situation is nearly humoristic...

13:42 Prof. Matogawa into the press room. "We still don't know whether it touched down or not. Hayabusa did go into the safe mode. We also know it now hovers futher away from the home positon. Hayabusa is now in safe mode, stabilizing itself with a gentle spin, with its solar array facing to the sun. Medium gain antenna transmits signal with an 18 dgrees cone. We receive the house keeping data only when the Earth is within its cone. Hayabusa is broadcasting its house keeping data with medium gain antenna repeatedly.
We don't know why it entered into the safe mode. It is not clear whether it received the safe mode command from Earth or not. Hayabusa has an option of going into the safe mode from its autonomous mode. This could also be the case.
Low gain antenna transmits the signal into every direction. So we didn't know Hayabusa was rotating. It was not before we received the signal from medium gain antenna that we realized it is rotating.
Usuda station ends contact with Hayabusa around 14:55. We plan to estabilsh the 3-axis atitude control before the contact through Usuda ends.
We hold the next DSN station, Madrid, Spain, from 17:25 to 22:00. After the next is Usuda, from 08:30 tomorrow morning to 14:55. We would like to establish the attitude control this afternoon.
Our current goals are 1) establish the attitude control and 2) attempt to go back to Itokawa again. We are evaluating which goal to perform and when."
Next briefing will be around 16:00 (07:00 GMT), when Usuda station ends contact with Hayabusa.

Ahh yes. Their translations are superior to Google's. Thanks for that link. Perhaps we'll learn a little more before too long. It sounds as if the Japanese press is pushing hard for more definite information prior to the postponed press conference.

...and regarding others comments about the success of this mission, I agree with those saying it has already been a success. But I do admit to hoping for a little more success.

Good luck, It is quick the ぶ.

P.S. Thanks for the frequent and brutally honest updates.

This is why I have been anxious to find out how the mass of Itokawa was determined. The solution sets for gravity anomalies on Mars do vary with altitude, and this degeneracy is generall attributed to the varying wavelengths of the radar used by the varying missions at different altitudes.

Hayabusa's approach to Itokawa is quite unique, it was not in orbit, and as near as I can tell, they used the radar during the standoff, and the resulting force vectors, to refine calculations of the mass of Itokowa. Without the reaction wheels, there was considerable room for error in these determinations, especially if the prior determinations of the mass of Itokowa were low (IAOTO they were.)

Stuck, or in a deeper gravity well than expected? Once again, an ultra stable oscillator would have been a nice tool to have on board Hayabusa. Hopefully, with two-way telemetry re-established they can still sort some of this out...

Indeed Hektor's tip gives us the best English language source to date. This came just in:

14:40 Mr. Matsuura's personal speculation based on the press briefings by JAXA/ISAS: "I got the impression that we did not experience such a strange hovering nor going into safe mode during the last three descent operations.
It may as well be the consequences of the event specific to this operation, namely the touch down!?
It could be due to the touch down that Hayabusa lost the attitude and entered into the safe mode??
Safe mode means the probe is safe. Anyway we are not in the worst situation."

Could Itokawa for some reason have an electric charge that zapped "It is quick the ぶ"? It is somewhat closer to the Sun than Eros. Then again, the Sun was at a Solar Maximum during Near, but now nears minimum.

Must just be bad luck I guess.

15:46 Prof. Matogawa says the project manager Kawaguchi will show up at 4pm. Regaining the 3-axis attitude control seems not completed in time during the Usuda station communication. Press briefing will start at 4pm.

I hope all the unexpected manoeuvres during the glitch in autonomous mode, then in safe mode and finally to regain the 3-axis attitude control will not have consumed to much fuel, already in a critical state, or Hayabusa may not be able to return to earth.

I know that Odave. I have twins, 26 month old.
They wake up between 5:30 and 6:30 every day. I sometimes succeed in putting them back in bed for 1h more, although not very often.
