KAI-2020 is like Mastcam, not the Navcam used in these images--the different FOV might be an issue. I'm not aware of any Mastcam capability to use the JPL DD-detection code. I suspect the Navcams (buffered frame transfer & electronic shutter, same hardware as Spirit) could use the code, but not in the current flight software.

Spirit's automated detections were used, at least, in the Greeley et al. 2010 dust devil climatology.

Well, there was the automatic DD-detection code used by Spirit:

Yep, that's what I was thinking of, but couldn't find the link to!

If a rover has 17 "eyes" then a bit of processing power to add reflexes so it "reacts and remembers"
when something around it changes quickly makes sense.

That way, off duty nav-cams catch dust devils, or mardi catches wind swirling around the rover or morning frost.

Good point, I'd missed that, popular press indicates the KAI-2020 chips are on 4 cameras,
Mahli, Mardi & 2 Mastcams, not the navcams.

Clouds on sol 1580:
Attached Image

There are possibly two layers, one moving from 7 to 1 o'clock, and another more diffuse moving 5 to 11-ish.

A quick bit of searching indicates the cameras use KAI-2020 chips, with "electronic shutters"
which (if I read the whitepaper correctly) means the camera sensors stay on and what gets
turned on/off is the sensor's connection to data storage.

It doesn't work that way. When the camera is off, it's off. It takes a fair amount of power to run the cameras (a few watts), so it's not like they are run more than needed.

Looks like a short drive on 1585 to take us towards a target featured in the 1584 'drive direction' L-MastCams (center)

I would love to see a nice mastcam R portrait of Ireson Hill.

Maybe the elves at rover HQ read this, maybe they don't.... wink.gif

The pre drive NavCam thumbs for sol 1587 suggest a larger than normal search for DD's smile.gif

MP reported the drive as ~27.4m South (170º), possibly bypassing Ireson Hill? Heading straight for the gap in the Dunes? Or maybe they have seen a better path to the butte smile.gif

Thanks, Paul - Half a panorama is enough for an unambiguous location, thanks to some big blocks nearby. Here it is in circular form.

Attached Image

On the dust devil front, I now have a dust devil from sol 1545, but nothing earlier. The long sequence on sol 1587 will make a nice movie if any DDs show up. Almost all the DDs I have noted earlier were south of the rover, and only one showed up looking north.

Posting this here from HiRISE thread as it covers the area around Ireson & beyond, actually that is a better title! Ah well.

Great movie, Sean!

DDs on sol 1585 - here's one:

There are two very faint ones in the late day sequence as well.
